I have downloaded openrefine (v3.3 beta) and also have java, however when I try to open the file, I get the black coding screen for a split second before that closes. What do I fix to be able to properly open it (or am I trying to open the wrong thing)?

Hi Rebecca,

Thanks for reporting this. Have you had any success with 3.2?
I assume you use Windows? Have you tried both refine.bat and refine.exe?

Sorry for bumping an old thread, but I have the same problem and am desperate for a fix. I have tried both 3.5.0 and 3.5.2, both refine.bat and refine.exe, nothing works.

Hi Alissa,

Typically if you see the console or terminal open and start to show something and then close quickly automatically then this indicates that there is an issue with finding Java on your system which OpenRefine needs as mentioned in our docs: Installing OpenRefine | OpenRefine

It's likely that you tried the Windows release without the embedded Java if you are using Windows?
We do offer an easy path for OpenRefine on Windows with the Windows kit with embedded Java release as shown on our Download page Download · OpenRefine
Or if you are using Mac or Linux, then your Java installation might not be set up correctly.  We provide Installing instructions in our docs at that same link above, just choose your operating system within the docs.

Let us know if you need further assistance,

Thanks for posting this thread - my version of OpenRefine suddenly stopped working on my Mac, had no idea what was going on. I had to download a fresh version (update) of Java for my Mac and it immediately fixed whatever was going on.

I am again unable to launch OpenRefine.  When I attempt to run it from Terminal this is what I get (note: I am not a developer nor do I have any knowledge of Java):

 ~ % /Volumes/OpenRefine/OpenRefine.app/Contents/MacOS/JavaAppLauncher ; exit;

Hi there,

I was having the same issue. The problem was with the OpenRefine folder in my  appData directory. I backed up the folder, deleted it, started OpenRefine again, and it worked perfectly.
In my machine, the OpenRefine folder is in the roaming directory. Yours should be similar.

C:\Users\Y530\AppData\Roaming\

I followed the instructions I found in an old post:

1. Backup the OpenRefine folder under your AppData folder.  (use Zip or whatever archive tool like 7z that you have on Windows and then move this .zip file to a safe location or additionally uploaded to the cloud somewhere)
2. Delete the OpenRefine folder under your AppData folder.
3. Start OpenRefine, which will recreate the folder and workspace folder within it.
4. Report back any good news, then we can take next steps (which will be to selectively move your project folders back into place from your saved .zip backup file)
