Hi, Marek!
I was just wondering if you really need to install the whole gnome thing to get the display issues fixed or if it's sufficient to install just some sub-dependency of gnome.
I am only speaking for Arch Linux. Here, the package/group "gnome" consists of 65 other packages:
https://archlinux.org/groups/x86_64/gnome/
Which therefore pull in another bunch of dependencies.
I am asking which component is causiung your issues and which component installation make them disappear?
xdamage maybe?

Except of it the rest was working properly and with little inconveniences (like Windows closing or esthetic pain) an Openpnp was usable.
