Yah ... we'll do another one sometime in the first half of next year
with more notice ... this one sorta came together semi last minute due
to some Hanson-cog stuff, and then I figured why not invite other
OpenCoggers in case someone is available...
Actually I'd been thinking to do a Cogathon in Ethiopia (halfway
between the US and HK, close to Europe, and we have an office there
too), but it seems best to wait for that till the politics settles
down there at the moment ... currently e.g. the gov't seems to have
made mobile Internet access very difficult (whereas it used too be
fine in the cities)
As for interactions w/ remote folks -- definitely it makes sense to
stream the seminars and to record better videos than was done last
time.... However, beyond the seminars, where a general
"hackathon-type" event is concerned, it strikes me that mixing F2F
with online modalities may not be that wise. The beauty of F2F is
that we can discuss stuff while walking to lunch, and can mess around
with the AI on the Hanson robots with minimal hassle, etc. etc. ...
There's pretty much no way to share that experience with remote folks,
and constraining F2F folks to do stuff that can easily be shared in
real time w/ remote folks doesn't make much sense...
However, it does strike me that it would be possible and interesting
to do some sort of "purely online Cogathon" at some point, as a
separate event.... Delivering seminar or tutorial type content via
live video-chat is not difficult, and collaborative coding via Github
and Slack/MatterMost/whatever would work perfectly well.... I like
this idea more than trying to too fully online-ify a F2F event.... I
think a purely online Cogathon could work great if both "insiders" and
newbies decided to put time into it.... Perhaps we should try that
after this upcoming F2F cogathon and before the next F2F one...
