I am attempting to set up the PHD2 syst4em. My camera connects fine (ZWO 174) even with the 3910 focal length of the tube on a OAG.

However, when I attempt to connect the Celestron CGX-L using the CPWI (ASCOM) item on the drop down list, I immediately get the following error:

PHD2.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working properly. Windows will close the program and notify you is a solution is available".

I am running the most current PHD-2 and Celestron programs. I also tried the Celestron Telescope Driver without success.

What should I do next.

Hi Bill

sorry to hear that. if you can upload your debug logs, that will definitely help

Hi William,

There's a problem with the CPWI ASCOM driver; it crashes and brings down PHD2 with it.  You can search this forum for "CPWI" to see some other reports and what we have to say about it.  Here's a recent discussion thread: https://groups.google.com/d/topic/open-phd-guiding/-HMguEFkU1s/discussion

Hi Andy,

I looked at the thread. I did not see any solution. I am hopin that I am not out of luck! I will upload my files tomprrow. Hopefully there is a solution either with Celestron or ASCOM.

Problem fixed! While the mount was connected to the computer, I had not started the CPWI program and connected. Once done, the equipment properly connected and went to the next step in the program.

It’s always the simple things.

Thanks!

Bill,

Thanks for that information, maybe that will help others.   There is still a serious issue that needs to be fixed by Celestron since the driver is crashing and bringing down the application (phd2) with it, and that should never happen with a correctly functioning ASCOM driver.

Andy,
After you identified that CPWI was crashing PHD2 last week I submitted a Tech. Support request with Celestron which included your comments and the debug log.  The request is in their system but no action or response yet.  Perhaps if others with the same issue will submit requests then Celestron will move faster on the issue.  This is unfortunate as CPWI is a nifty program.

Bill,

Are you using PulseGuide?  I have been using CPWI with my AVX mount using ST4 on-camera guiding with no problems.

Mitch,
In PHD, how do you connect to CPWI - through the Aux Mount configuration?

Greg,

AVX is the name and make of his mount, not a port or configuration of PHD2.

Jay,

Yes, I understand as I also have an AVX.  Since he is doing ST-4 guiding then the mount must be set to "On Camera".  I was confirming that he connected to CPWI, via "Aux Mount".

I believe that is what Mitch confirmed.  If not, I'm sure he will clarify.

Thanks,

Greg

Yes, I connect to CPWI via the "aux mount" option in PHD2.

Hello all,

I’m new to guiding and seem to be having a bit of trouble connecting my CGX-L mount to PHD2 at the same time as CPWI is running. I can only connect to the mount through one or the other but not both at the same time. When ever I start CPWI and then try to connect to PHD2 and set the port I get a error stating the port access has been denied. I’m assuming this is because my computer will only recognize one program at a time for a given port ID. This issue happens if I use the usb pc connector on the mount and when I connect to the mount using the hand controller. Any assistance/advice with setup will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Perry

Hi Perry

it sounds like you need to be connecting via an ascom connection - this is kind of outside the PHD realm, but fortunately there are a number of celestron/ CPWI users here that can probably give you some pointers here

It looks like you have the exact same setup as I do (PHD + CGX-L and
CPWI). If you have a relatively recent version of CPWI, you use it as
your telescope driver. Meaning, select "CPWI" in the telescope selection
dialog in PHD. I had the same trouble as you are until about a year or
so ago, IIRC. The latest versions of CPWI are much more reliable.

Hi Perry

If you  are using CPWI then you need to choose CPWI as the connection in PHD2.   You can not use both the Celestron Telescope driver and CPWI at the same time which is what I think you are trying to do.

If you are using the public release be aware there are bugs reported and I quit using it while waiting for a new beta release for testing .   The new beta CPWI has just been released a few days  ago and I am going to try it out this weekend hopefully if there are no clouds.   I figure that with a full moon that is a good night to experiment.

All,

Thank you for the suggestions, as many of you suspected I did have the celestron telescope driver selected and not CPWI ASCOM driver in the PHD drop down. I'll make those changes and see if it works fingers crossed. Also I am currently using CPWI vs. 2.3.4, is this the most version and where can I go to download the beta?

Thank you,
Perry
