Hey everyone,

I enjoyed the last meeting and am looking forward to the next one. Like I said before, I was happy to present at the first meeting and facilitate future meetings, and this is still the case for now. I do have other topics that I am passionate about that I would like to present on someday, but the rest of my life is busy enough that I can only commit to presenting maybe 1-2 times a year.

I have yet to hear from anyone who wants to present, so until that happens, that leaves the next meeting in limbo. However, I do have two ideas I would like to get your feedback on:
  1. Getting someone from outside the group to present
    1. If you know someone whom you would love to listen to talk for an hour about something Linux or Open Source related that they know a fair bit about, try asking them if they would be open to presenting to OALUG. If they say yes, let me know, and I can set things up with them.
  2. Non-presentation-based meetings
    1. Do all meetings need to be based on a presentation? Could we do something more chill, like hosting a hack or game night? Please share if that appeals to you, or if you have an interesting idea for a different meeting format.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Clayton,

I would like to see a meeting where we install Linux on an older laptop.

I have one that I can bring in.

Also, I would like to have a meeting where we talk about Raspberry Pis.

Hey Frank! Thanks for reaching out, and sorry for the slow response time!

There are absolutely meetings that we could hold related to both of these topics; however, I'm concerned that these ideas, as stated, lack a hook that would pull a crowd. But with some refinement, I think we can make them work. I'll share some of my thoughts on both of these ideas to get the ball rolling, and if you or anyone else wants to throw in their two cents, I'm all ears.

Installing Linux on an old laptop
If we can get even 3-4 people to say they are interested in doing something like that, I think that is worth holding a meeting for.

Back when I ran the BYU Linux Club, once a semester, we would hold an "Install-fest" in the lobby of the computer science building where club members would help students install Linux on their laptops as VMs, dual boots, or even as a standalone OS. It was great fun and an awesome way to introduce 70-100 people to Linux. Ultimately, the reason why that activity worked so well is that there was a demand from the student body to become more familiar with Linux on their own computers.

Another idea is to hold a distro night, where we give people a chance to try out a bunch of different Linux distros on several different computers. I'm a little fuzzy on how the meeting would be formatted, but I could see that being fun.

Raspberry Pis
I see two kinds of meetings coming out of this:
  1. Introduction to Raspberry Pis, what features do they have, what are they good/bad at etc.
  2. Projects that utilize a Raspberry Pi
Between the two, I think #2 has more potential to be interesting and to draw a crowd. But again, having messed with Pis a fair bit, I'm biased, and if the people want #1, I'm all for setting it up.

An idea I have had that is related to #2 is to hold a project night where everyone can bring whatever they have been tinkering with at home and show it off to the group. I'm certain that kind of event will draw one or two Raspberry Pis out from people's home labs :)

---
Again, I am open to ideas, and ultimately, I want to create something that is interesting and valuable to all of you. So let me know what you think!

For what it’s worth, also adding non-presentation meetings for just coming together to talk shop can also be fruitful. I do like that idea.

Between the conversations I've had online and offline, the idea of holding a project night has gained some traction, so I am putting it on the calendar. I haven't reserved the library yet, but expect a date in early June. I also have had someone volunteer to give a presentation about modding 3D printers sometime in July. Keep your eyes open for more information about that!

The expectation for the project night will be that if you have a technical project that you've been tinkering with in your spare time, bring it with you (if possible; if not, pictures are encouraged). We will go around the table and give everyone a chance to show off their project and to answer questions. If you don't have a project, don't worry about it. Just come and geek out.

To prime the pump a little, I'll show off my home server running Unraid and, if there is time, I can also show off my custom 3D-printed split keyboard.

Good news, everyone! The next OALUG meeting is on the calendar!

Date and time: June 10th, 2025 @ 6:30-8
Location: Weber County Southwest branch Library in Roy. Meeting will be in the board room.  https://maps.app.goo.gl/fh4ui5HB89KRoSjx9?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy
When you enter the library’s front entrance, turn left, walk a couple dozen feet down that hall, and on the left wall there will be two conference rooms. We are in the one furthest down the hallway.

Topic: Project Night!

Bring something you've been tinkering with recently! If you can show it off in person, great! If not, bring pictures! Don't have anything to show off? Come and ask questions!

Don't feel limited to only Linux-related projects! Anything open source or just plain cool is fair game!

Feel free to share ahead of time what you're planning on bringing! Personally, I've recently set up a home server / NAS on Unraid that I'd like to show off and get feedback on.

Looking forward to seeing y'all there!

Hey everyone!

Just a final reminder that we will be meeting on Tuesday of this week. Again, we are hosting a project night, where you can bring any open-source or DIY project you've been working on to share with the group. If you can't physically bring anything, pictures are encouraged! I'm looking forward to seeing what people bring!

I posted to the OALUG account on twitter and tagged Tristan. He has been doing some AI stuff.

I might be able to make it. Having to do vehicle repairs first.
