Hi everybody.

I'm planning to pop along to the open evening next Wednesday, the 17th.

Is there anybody available to give me a crash course in the CNC machine? I've got a project that I need to cut a few pieces for but haven't used CNC in a very long time and I don't want to assume I know what I'm doing!

A couple of images of what I'll be cutting, with materials, are linked below. If somebody could have a look and tell me if your CNC can even do this size that would be appreciated!

Lastly, if Wednesday doesn't work for you then just let me know what other times would and I can accommodate.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex,

Do come along on a Wednesday to have a look around, get to know us,
and learn a few basic about the machine.

We are a club of people who like to make things and not a service or
facility, so things might not be quite as you expect them, but the
easiest way of working out what is what is to come and visit.

Also I warn you that this is perhaps not as simple as you think. I see
some design and layout issues that will need to be addressed. My
suggestion is you come and say hi, then find when a member will be
using it where you can shadow what is going on, and then take that
learning away and fix the design.

All the best,

Alistair

Sorry Alistair, I should have said those images weren't the final drawings but merely to show the dimension of the boards.

If you fancy having a look at the proper plans they're linked below.

Hi Alex,

If it was for dimensions then I am afraid it will not fit. The details
are on the wiki linked form the web site. There are ways of keying and
doing the cuts in two halves, but doing two parts and joining them is
often easer and safer all round.

Honestly, the best option is to pay us a visit on a Wednesday and you
will get a much better handle on what we are and what is available.
The CNC has been out of action recently but a new part has arrived so
it might be running on Wednesday so you can see it in action, but even
if it is not you can still find out what you need to know. To clarify,
it is not possible to get to use the CNC on your first visit. You will
need to pay us a visit so you understand what we are and so we can
meet you, then join as a member, then come back and do a general
induction, and then learn from another member how to use the machine.

All the best,

Alistair

Hi Alex,

The Workbee router wiki page is here:

Specifically the bit you'll be interested in is the working area : 1270x1270mm

Now, it looks like provided you're prepared to cut your sheets into 800 x 1200 sections, then it looks like it would be able to cut the sub-sheet sections you need.

That said, as Alistair said, the bigger machines (including this one) are members-only and while I'd definitely encourage you to come along, have a look at what we are and what we offer, you'd need to join the space as a member to be able to use the Workbee.
Unfortunately, the bigger machines pose a  higher risk of both injury and equipment damage, hence that requirement.

David

I really did a bad job with my first post!

I should stress I'm not expecting to just waltz in and have somebody else do the work for me! Before I moved up here I was a member of the Bristol Hackspace for years so I'm familiar with how these community workshops operate.

The CNC work is just the excuse to get myself through the door! I will absolutely be getting involved and using the space for more things going forwards, mostly building little combat robots (I was a Robot Wars kid growing up), and general nerdy tinkering.

Hi Alex,

We have a lot of parallels with Bristol, but every space is unique and
there are also many differences, so expect a few things to operate
differently. No matter what the thing to do is to come along on a
visitor night. That is always the first step and needs to be done
before you can join as a member. it is also the ideal time to ask
questions and learn what is what. If you have a little robot to bring
in then I know some members will be interested in seeing it.
