Long story short:  need powerful desktop system to run Linux on; where to buy?
My idea of powerful was more than 8GB RAM, that's probably more than 12GB RAM now.

less short:
Howard's 1st rule:  if it doesn't break in a year, you paid too much (buy used?)

I'm happy to say that we've had not a single issue with Linux for our 77 year old computer hater; didn't even need an introduction to go from Win7 to Kubuntu and thankfully avoided Win10-
So now I need a desktop system to get my other more (computer) knowledgeable co-worker going on Linux.

Well, Michael, you coulda asked me first... :D

Memory != power. Processor = power. Memory allows the processor(s) to
do more work.

Lemme go kicking about and see what I find.

Hello y'all:

This is Justin and I am replying to the previous message as a top post regarding hardware upgrades that are relatively cheap and available in the marketplace without having to have a RFQ, RFP, and talk to a sales rep before buying to  run say a IBM z11 or iseries and so forth...

Well. Yeah I totally understand what you mean!

I would say go with at least a quad core Intel or AMD system with at least 16 GB Ram.

This is what I ordered to upgrade my current personal workstations.

They work extremely well

I purchased mine from a refurbished reseller selling on Amazon.

Basically these are the 1 year old systems that Corporate Businesses are upgrading from currently.

I recently purchased both a HP Z Book and a HP ProDesk.

To upgrade my current Microsoft Workstations to be compliant with the protocol for Windows 10.

As I have a number of Java remote systems that query the user's machine to check that it is in compliance before granted access to the Java remote website hosted elsewhere. To access the applet it requires x,y,z.

So I had to upgrade as my current hardware did not like the Windows 10 upgrade it could only run Windows 7. Eventually the Systems will get converted to some BSD /fedora or Debian flavor... Once I have more time.

There are a number of companies selling these business workstation systems on NewEgg and Amazon.

Both of these machines have 4 CPUs ....

Hopefully this will help you out.

Of course just over the last several weeks there are always more faster machines being refurbished that are faster and the costs are getting cheaper.

When these machines originally were new on the market the MSRP was 200 to 300% more in Price.

Most of these machine cases are a bit rugged depending on how you have it vertically or horizontally or in a desk.

The ones I currently use at the office do not have as much capacity.
They are only 8GB ram and have only "dual core" but " it just works". I have been using the workstation system to connect to our other information systems for the last three years daily with no issues but it needed a little oomph for what. I use it at home for.

And we run them 24/7/365 until they break and then we order a new one from HP.

Hopefully this helps someone who is running. 'mission critical' small business or personal systems running your favorite operating system some flavor of BSD/ AIX/ HP-UX/ Unisys /Oracle /Sun/SuSE/Red Hat /Debian/ etc.

Your mileage may vary.

If you need help reply to the mailing list.

Cheers from Justin

Thanks everybody, we should have all the info we need now:  for anyone wanting to use Linux, but not there yet- a cheap old laptop and a 16GB USB thumb drive will get you started, bring it to NLUG meeting; it will pay off
