Hi Folks, a little off-topic (but perhaps not)...can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced bench top multimeter for a hobbyist who's trying to understand a little bit more about electronics (me..). I have a good handheld but am looking for something a little more permanent for my workshop and thought I'd ask some of the pro's on this forum....

Thanks in advance,

Nick

I'm a huge fan of the Agilent 34401A - now superceded but still the best selling bench DMM ever. The replacement 34461A new is less than a new 344301A but the older one is often available on auction sites.

Probably overkill but undoubtedly the best there is :)

Cheers

There are a lot of HP 3478A available on ebay in varying condition at affordable prices. I was lucky to find one for $150 in Europe in great condition.

The 3478A is a very good meter as are most of the HP's and same for Fluke. The Fluke 8840 series is quite good, and should be affordable on Ebay as well. BUT, as with all things on Ebay either buy one that is warrantied to be in good 'working' condition, ""OR"" is at least returnable to the seller.   Ira.

Yes the 34401A is an excellent meter, I have several here on different
benches in our lab, and as you mention has been superseded. However it
probably still sells for around four hundred bucks, give or take, on
Ebay in WARRANTIED working condition, which may still be a bit much for
some folks. Ira.

The HP's and Flukes are all really good but I picked up a Techtronixs CDM250 awhile back for a song and a dance. Nice meter. Look on the bay as there is plenty there of all types.

What are You about to measure? What scope do You have? If You are a common hobbyist starting up then dispose of the plans for a bench multimeter. What You really need is a scope. Doing electronics without one is like trying to fix a clockwork with a blindfold put on. There are many good scopes available as used for nice prices. An analog one with CRT and 100MHz+ bandwidth is a good choice. Tektronix and HP/Agilent made excellent analog CRT scopes that are now available as used for a reasonable price when sold out in favour of modern LCD screen digital replacements.

I have a scope (Red Pitaya - Kickstarter) device on the way. My portable multimeter has seen better days (the stand is broken and it's a pain to change the batteries in it)...so I wanted a relatively inexpensive bench top one I could plug in instead...I'll keep my eye out for a good HP one (the agilent 34401 looks a little bit of an overkill of my needs...). I use it primarily to test voltage, capacitance and resistivity, the usual...no data logging (yet)..

Thanks to all for suggestions!

Cheers,

Nick
