I think "Panaplex" is a trademark from Beckmann/Burroughs for the multiplexed display technology they were promoting in the 1970s as the battled with up-and-coming LEDs .

It looks like a VFD calculator display. Most interesting for the packaging.

Why would you buy one of then for that price when you can get the following for a lot cheaper?

Excellent, you have just solved a minor mystery for me.

The Rockwell Anita 1211 SL electronic calculator from the mid 1970s has a circuit board which is marked, among other things, “Pandicon” – http://anita-calculators.info/html/anita_1211_sl.html

However, the display is flat and looks nothing like the photographs of any Pandicon that I could find, since they were all tubular.

I was beginning to doubt that the display was actually a Pandicon.

The Philips ZM1500 Pandicon on eBay looks identical to the one in the calculator, so I have just bought one out of interest.

Thanks,

Nigel T.

Happy to help! Yep, not a pandicon at all, but still a nice neon display....
