Autograph of Elias of Nisibis?

Dear all,

Having recently reviewed the literature on the bilingual Gospel manuscript Leipzig UB Or. 1075 + London BL Add. 26116, which is generally dated to the 10th century, it seems to me that this dating goes back to the first publications on the manuscript by Tischendorf and Gildemeister.

Gildemeister compares its Arabic script to an autograph by Elias of Nisibis, which he had access to and which he dates to around 1000 CE (Tischendorf took this over from him). Unfortunately, Gildemeister does not reveal where he saw this autograph or which manuscript this is.

Does anyone know what manuscript this might be? Does anyone know of any autographs by Elias of Nisibis?

Dear Peter,

I believe that the manuscript studied by Gildemeister is BL Add. 7197. It contains Elias of Nisibis’ Chronography in a bilingual, Syriac–Arabic, format. Several hands can be distinguished in its production, and it has been suggested that Elias himself may have been involved as well.

Both manuscripts—Leipzig UB, Or. 1075 + London, British Library, Add. 14467 (sic!), and BL Add. 7197—are discussed in my survey of Syro-Arabic bilingual manuscripts, which I hope will be published before too long.
