Kernel Ghosts and Defensive Ghosts

Abstract:
This session is a two-sided battle. First, I will show you how we build deep kernel-level tunnels – custom loadable modules, syscall hooking, raw socket manipulation, and eBPF-based covert channels that bypass user-space detection. We will compile and inject a real tunneling module live, and I will walk you through the memory addresses, the network packets, and the persistence tricks that make traditional security tools go blind. But here is the twist – after we break in, I immediately switch to blue team mode and show you exactly how to protect yourself against these exact same attacks. I will teach you how to monitor your own kernel for unauthorized module loads, how to check syscall tables for anomalies, how to use auditd and eBPF tracing to catch the very tunnels we just built, and how to harden your kernel parameters to block these techniques in the first place. You will leave this session not just knowing how to hack the kernel, but also how to lock it down like a military bunker. This is offensive engineering combined with defensive forensics – purple teaming at the deepest level.

Duration:
I am going to need about 25 minutes for the full attack-demo-defend cycle, plus 5 to 10 minutes for Q&A because people will have a lot of questions. So call it 35 minutes total, but I can trim it to 30 if the schedule is tight.

Hands-on participation:
I will prepare two separate labs that run on the same machine. In phase one, attendees who have a Linux test VM with root access and kernel headers installed can compile and load my tunneling module alongside me. In phase two, I will hand out a simple defensive script that scans the kernel for the exact footprints we just created – things like checking loaded module lists, verifying syscall integrity, and monitoring network connections for weird ICMP patterns. If they want to follow along on both sides, they just need a clean Ubuntu or Debian VM with build-essential and linux-headers installed. For everyone else, I will run everything on my projector screen so they can watch the attack happen, then watch me detect it and kill it in real time. I will send a prep email with a one-line setup command a few days before so people can get ready, but the defensive half requires no extra setup because we are using built-in Linux tools like auditd, lsmod, and trace-cmd.

Title:
Self-hosting is easier than you think

Abstract:
This session will focus on using open-source platform-as-a-service software to enable individuals own their data and infrastructure. I will make the case on why people should consider self-hosting including showing the various applications that one can self-host to escape subscription hell or huge AWS bills. I plan to show that it isn't as complicated as it sounds if what you're hosting is something basic and not some million dollar multi-service application. This should work for people learning on their own or even SMEs.

Duration:
I will basically fly through the presentation so maximum 15 to 20 minutes for presentation and about 15 to 20 minutes for a demonstration.

Practical:
I'll show how to setup your own VPS + open-source PaaS combo so internet access will be needed. I'll also talk/demonstrate the various features the PaaS can help manage that add extra costs on the likes of Vercel and Render.  This'll be a good learning opportunity on how to interconnect things and get your projects online for everyone to see but on your own terms.

This is nice. Thanks. Would the software run on a desktop or two? If so,
maybe it is better to have the talk in August? This would allow for
more time for the presentation and the practical. Challenges are static
IP addresses and reliable power. It would also be of interst to self
host some of the LUG infrastructure.

So far, I've been running the software on a VPS. I have been looking into running it on a desktop + internet connection, however.

For the presentation, I could focus on the "why" of self-hosting and showcase some things I'm running on a VPS.

In August, I could focus on doing something practical on a local machine. Maybe something relevant to the LUG infrastructure.
