Hi Douglas and the community,

Tagging you here to keep the conversation relevant to this upcoming meetup rather than the last thread!

You did a great job on the poster last time.Would it be possible to turn it into a reusable template? Benson had suggested (and I think it's a great idea) that it would be great to have it done in an open source tool like Inkscape or Penpot, so the community can build on it going forward. We can share that in our GitHub repo as well.

We're also thinking of setting up a dedicated space, a separate chat room that syncs across our active channels like Telegram and IRC - where folks interested in design and community work can collaborate more easily. We'll figure out the details as we go, but the idea is to have a place where we can always reach you and others on topics like this. It could even be a chance someday to share how you use these open source tools to create amazing designs, whether for NaiLUG or beyond.

Beyond design, we'd love to see this extend to other teams of interest - engineering, marketing, and any other relevant areas where community members can pitch in and help. The goal is to create spaces where people can contribute in ways that match their skills and interests, and together build something stronger for the community.

On that note, I'd also be happy to mentor anyone interested in community engineering work - here and beyond. I'm involved with Fedora as well, so if anyone is keen on learning how to grow as a community and documentation person, across open source communities, don't hesitate to reach out.

Would love to have you and others involved!

Hello Cornelius!

The design is free(as in speech) for anyone who would like to use it.

I am not proficient on the tools mentioned above(Penpot and Inkscape), but I will try them out soon for sure. I primarily use Canva alongside Adobe Express. From my understanding of what a template is, I have made a copy of the design available here for anyone to tinker with, rough drafts and original template inclusive. Feel free to reach out if you needed something else.

The specialized spaces idea sounds great, following closely.

Can you export as an SVG:

https://dailycreativeco.com/export-canva-logo-as-vector-file/

This requires Canva PRO subscription. Having an SVG allows for greater
creative freedom as one can use Free and Open Source Software.

I have a subscription:

Attached is the first page from the Canva link in svg and high quality eps. format.

The drawback is that all the text is converted to vector objects, so anyone working with these files will have to redo the text.

Will convert to a file that can be used with Inkscape. Is there a preference for the fonts?
Ideally, a font under OFL-1.1 or similar free license.

Hi, I might be confusing Douglas and Newton. Could you please clarify who did the designs last time? A proper introduction at the next meetup would really help clear that up :)

Benson or anyone (Douglas/Newton), could you please get the design by tomorrow?

Best,

Hello Cornelius,

I made the designs last time. Newton shared what Benson requested as I do not have a canva pro subscription.

Here is a poster draft for the May meetup. I would like your help with the following things:

1. Does this work? Tried creating a space theme based on recent happenings
2. Deciding if we should use the speakers photographs. Currently I only downloaded their images from gmail as placeholders(pretty low quality). You could ask them for better suited ones if they are willing. If not we could use Tux/ The Hurd placeholders like last time. Or remove them altogether.
2. What will Benson's talk be about?

The desing template is available here, for anyone to make the modifications once Cornelius replies. I might not be able to access my device to make the mods on canva.

Also, I saw that you had tried to tag me in another thread earlier. I missed that since I have been held up for the past couple of days. I enjoy creating the designs, but for posterity's sake and in the spirit of openess, I think it would be better if you requested any volunteer to come up with the design, similar to what Benson did last time. That would also help ensure active participation amongst the designers in the group. Case in point, Newton having a pro canva subscription does hint at his professionalism, it would be interesting to see some of his work.Tell me what you think.

Hello Mbugua, got it.

I like the design. But I would prefer having a consistent design poster, if possible this time or next time. I would provide more info later today or tomorrow evening on that.
ABout the speakers' photographs, we could use the default tux logo for now until they've shared it.

Also, can you use the LUG logo I've shared at the top left? Would be nice having that there, and replace the speakers' photographs with the tux.

Benson's topics;
Part 1: Uhuru Mara Nne
Part 2: Introduction to Music Player Daemon - Setting up your own music streaming service

Thank you!

If there are enough people, doing a new poster each time is nice design practice.
This would also give designers exposure.

Modified to use only content with free licenses.

Font used is comfortaa, svg file is for Inkscape.

Background image is from:

Reusing Canva templates outside of Canva is problematic:

Maybe you can do the replacement Cornelius?
Consider setting up a group on Penpot:
https://penpot.app/

One can add upto 8 people.

If there are enough designers, running a Penpot server maybe a good idea.
Penpot code is mostly Clojure, so people familiar with javascript maybe
comfortable making changes.

Mods:
1. Added the Nairobi Lug logo, removed Tux from there
2. Replaced Daniel's photos with a better quality one... Gravine and Benson are yet to share theirs. If so we could scrap that part off and just use Tux and a microphone alongside it.
3. Updated speaker talks section
4. Updated template link

Hi Mbugua,

Thanks for your active engagement. I do not post my photo online.

What were your thoughts on the Inkscape version?
https://paste.coalserver.de/?48862ef7eedfd183#8kiB3ezFZGj12yzFkadNj3brFps2VyeqWURyi8mazUkf
https://paste.coalserver.de/?898392a0919e0053#HJXn4M1jfDGLU3nDWCEW8JGTTNWMjYUH4R7Z9y4ntJid

As this is a free and open source software (FOSS) group,
it would be nice to use FOSS software as much as is practical.

I usually do not top post:
https://git-send-email.io/top-posting.html

as it makes email lists more difficult to use.
