I set the start on some tasks (in this case, lead time is 1 week).  When I use the filter "Due next 7 days", the task only shows on the due date.

How do I make ti show on this list starting on the start date?

Hello James,

You can set up custom filters, or even customize the built-in filters.

To customize the filters in the desktop version, you need to open the "Filter" pane from the bottom-left corner of the window (it will then pop up and cover your list of views). In the Filter pane, you'll see a heading "Group & Sort". Click on the "Sort" button under that heading and then you can choose to sort by Start date. Once you've made the filter and sort changes that you want, the button at the bottom allows you to save your edited view.

In the iOS App, you slide the task list over to the right (using the menu handle in the top-left corner), to reveal your list of views. At the bottom-left is an "Edit" button - Tapping that allows you to make views visible or to edit and customize individual views with your preferred filter and sort options.

I hope that helps.

Hi  Stéphane,

Thanks for the response.  However, your suggestion does not work for me.  That task with the start date and due date still only shows in the task list at the due date time.  It does not appear on the start date at all (which defeats the purpose).  I have been just moving the due date from day to day (so I don’t forget to work on it).

I would like very much to this to work.

James

It has been a year now.  Let me try again to describe the problem.  I set a task (either a stand-alone or project step) with a start date and a due date, In the view "Due Next 7 Days", The only place the task shows is in the due date.  What do I have set incorrectly?  The help file says:

"You can specify when a task should appear in your to-do list and when a task is the due. The Start date parameter indicates when this task should appear in the to-do list. Due date shows when this task should be completed. Lead time is the time between Due date and Start date."

How can I make the work as the help file says it should?

Hi James, I think I understand what you mean. I installed a trial of MLO 5.0.2 and I notice that in the view for the next 7 days it is only showing the tasks which are due in the next week and not those that only start in the next week. Is that what you see?

I can see why they chose to go by the due date because it keeps something simpler, so I wonder how easy it is to create a view that shows what you want. I haven't done much with this yet but I hope it is possible to create a view for them.

Yes, you understand my problem correctly.  The documentation (ie help file) says that it will do as I suggested it should, but as far as I know, it has never done it.  The way it is currently if I have a task that will take 3 days, all I see on the to-do list is an entry in the list for the date it is due (letting me know that I should have been working on this three days ago).

Can you send a screenshot? I use a "due next 30" all the time and don't have any issues with items with start dates.

I'm afraid I don't understand.  If I set the filter to "Start Date" from "Today" to "Today+30", I get one long list (and the task does show at the due date in that list).  If I user next 7 days standard view (which divides the list into the next 7 days), the task does not show until the due date.  The documentations says that It will start showing on the start date and it isn't doing that.  I want a list of activities I should be working on by day and not have to look at all the due dates to see what tasks I should be working on in order to meet the due date.

So help me understand how to set it up so that I get a daily list of tasks that start showing on my daily activity list, beginning at the start date.

Thanks for your help.

Hello James. So, if a task starts on the coming Monday and is due on the Wednesday, are you expecting to see the same task listed in all of the groups under the heading’s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday? If that’s what you’re expecting, I’m sorry that the view won’t show you that. Each task will only be shown once in a date-sorted list. By default, the “due next 7 days” view has the tasks sorted and grouped by due date. If you want to see them listed under the start date, you can edit the filter to sort and group your tasks by start date. However you can’t show a task multiple times, grouped under its start date, due date and every day in between.

On the iOS version (and probably the Android version) there’s a feature that might be closer to what you want. It’s called the “Today” view and the button for it sits just below the inbox button and the list of Outline views. It gives you trend lines showing the number of events and the number of active tasks on each day. If you tap on a point on the line, you get a list of the events and active tasks for that day. “Active” means a task which starts on/before and is due on/after that day. Is that useful for you? Who knows, it may be added to the desktop at some point, if enough people request it.

If I’ve misunderstood what you’re looking for, then my apologies.

It sounds like James is talking about a whole different issue where the task that has started in the next 7 days does not show up at all in the 7day view. It doesn't because the due date is more that 7 days away, but James is saying that it should show up because it needs to be worked on within the next 7 days.

OK, got it. So, you don't want to see "active" tasks which are due in the next 7 days, but any tasks which have started or will start (ie will become active) within the next 7 days. That's going to need a different filter.

I'm struggling to be able to produce that filter, using the Advanced filter options. Selecting "Active" tasks only doesn't work, because that only shows tasks which have already started (start date is now or in the past). Ideally, we need to select the filter for "All" tasks but then apply all seven of the filters listed for active tasks in the help manual (via the Contents list, under Basic concepts.. -> Views -> Task Filtering), except that we need to change criterium 3 to "the Start Date for the task is not set or Start Date is <= Today+7".  However, there are no Advanced filter criteria available to fully duplicate rules 2, 5 and 6 for all of its parents.

So, we could create a filter on All tasks which comes close, but it would still show tasks in branches with a completed grandparent task, a grandparent set for "hide in to-do", or a grandparent requiring subtasks to be completed in order.

You might get something useable if you create an outline view filter (instead of a to-do list view filter) which just filters out anything which has no subtasks AND has a start date >= Today+7

Regards,
Stéphane

Why don't you use the filter "Active" or "Available"? That should show you all tasks from "Start" date on (if they have a start date in it)

"Active" and "Available" tasks won't work in this case, because James wants to be able to include tasks which have not started yet (ie not yet active), but which will start in the next 7 days. That makes it tricky, even when using the long list of filter criteria currently available in the app.

btw: Isn't this a great community site? Four of us all jumping in to try to find a solution for James! ...and nobody ever trolls (hope I haven't spoken too soon :-))

All the best,

On iOS and Android there’s a standard view called Start in the Next 7 Days. Doesn’t this do what you want or am I missing something? Today (17th) it shows me tasks including ones with a start date of the 23rd and a due date of the 27th.

Is there an equivalent view on the desktop? I'm at my computer most of the day, and I check my tasks there, not on my phone.

Stéph

Well spotted, Nick!

I've just tried out that filter and it looks like the start date filter overrules the "Action Filter" (the first rule at the top of the list). Even though the help file says that an "Active" task or and "Available" task is one with a start date now or in the past, it seems that the Start Date filter ignores this rule. So you can set the start range to "Today + 7" and it shows everything that is already active or will be active in the next week.

I feel a bit silly for jumping straight to the Advanced filter criteria but, in my defence, the help file is a little misleading, here.

@Vicki Greer, yes the filter is one of the preset ones on the desktop, too.

Note that the Start date range criteria can be edited on the desktop version, but are not editable on the iOS version (don't know about the Android). They appear in the "additional UI filters" field on the iOS version. Of course, if you want another date range, it's possible to edit the rule on the desktop and then email it to your mobile device.

Problem solved! - Thanks Nick

James, does the Nick's suggestion get close to what you want to achieve? If not, please specify what the list should look like. Should it include unscheduled tasks that have no start/due date (such tasks are also active)?

I thought I had solved the problem from the suggestions here, but still am trying to get a view that does what I want.

What I would want is a task to be displayed on the 7 day list (note not DUE in 7 days) if any of the following conditions apply:

  1. The due date falls in the 7 day range of the list.
  2. Start date is prior to 7 day period and is not yet complete.
  3. If there is no start date, then treat as in rule 1.
Those with no due date would be excluded from the list as would all completed tasks.

I hope to get more time to try and set this up, but my development schedule is really heavy at the moment.

Thanks to everyone who has commented or suggested solutions.  This is a very active and useful list.

James, just doing a little reasonability testing of your requirement statement. The rules as you state them would result in:

A. A task with no start date and no due date will never appear in this view.

B. A task with a due date in the next 7 days will appear in the view even if the task has already been marked complete.

If you agree with both of these, the view is easily built. If you disagree, just state specifically how you would rather see it work.

Also, how would you like to see the view sorted? Maybe ascending due date?

Hello Dwight.
Reasonability Test B doesn't agree with James' fourth line of criteria (the unnumbered one, which says "Those with no due date would be excluded from the list as would all completed tasks". So, if completed, a task won't show up in the list, whatever start and due dates are assigned.

James, Is that right?

Yes, that is correct.  The purpose of the list is to specify which tasks should be worked on.  Completed tasks, by definition, would be excluded from the list.

Thanks, I missed that last line. OK, you want a view where the general filters are

Show Actions: All
Show Hierarchy: No
Show Completed: No

and the advanced filter is

((DueDateTime in the next 7 days) OR ((DueDateTime exists) AND (StartDateTime on or before Today+ 7))

Try importing the attached. I grouped by start date, but you can easily change to a different sort or group.

Hello Vicki,

In Windows: Press Alt-F1 to show the Views and Filters pane on the left. Make sure you're looking at the list of views, with the filter details collapsed to the bottom of the pane. Just to the right of the "Views" title, there's a settings gear icon. If you click on that, you'll see the option to import views (ie .mfv files).
