I've been using MLO for quite a while, but there's still a lot I don't understand with it.  I thought by just using it, it would all come together, but that hasn't quite happened.  What would really be helpful are few tutorials that actually start with a blank document and walk you through the process of using it (step by step) for some typical use cases.  But I haven't come across anything like that.  In my case, I think I just have a few gaps in my understanding that, once filled in, will bring it all together.  So I have a few (very basic) questions I'd like to ask.

1.  When you open a new blank file you're presented with a single tab (called My Workspace) in Outline view.  I understand how to enter projects, tasks, etc in that view.  However, I notice in the documentation examples that the tab showing the outline view is actually labeled "Outline", and not "My Workspace".  So are those the same but just labeled differently, or are there other differences?  If just a different label, how is that changed?  It wasn't obvious to me how to relabel a tab.

2. If I add a second tab (new workspace) I'm presented with the options to "Sync selection with first tab" and/or "Sync zoom with first tab".  What do those do?

3. If I add a second tab (with no selections checked) and change the view to "To-Do" I see the tasks defined in the first tab (as expected).  But as before, the label says "New Workspace" and not "To-Do" as the examples in the documentation show.  So again, is there a difference?

I think I'll stop here for now.  Thanks for the help!
Pat

Hi, Pat. Do you have a copy of the MLO User's Guide? If not, you can download one at
http://www.mylifeorganized.net/downloads/files/MyLifeOrganized%20User%27s%20Guide.pdf

While it's not an introductory tutorial video (you will find those at http://www.mylifeorganized.net/support.shtml#windows) it is a pretty thorough guide to using MLO and has the answers to a lot of your questions. You seem to be particularly concerned with issues about setting up and naming tabs so I would refer you to section 5.4, Workspace Tabs on pages 51 and 52. You will find instructions on how to create and rename tabs, and what those sync options mean. If you read these pages and still have questions please write back and somebody on this forum will try to help you.

Here are a couple of additional thoughts:
-The items in the left called "Outline" or "To-Do" are not actually views, they are groups of views. If you expand the group you will see other choices. The most popular outline is All Tasks a,d the most popular To-Do is Active Actions but you could select alternatives like Active Actions by Context or Start Next 7 Days if they help you to better manage your tasks. Or (eventually) you could design your own custom views with filters set up to exactly match how you want to see your tasks.

-The name on a tab has no effect on how the workspace works. For example, the way that you make a tab show an outline is by selecting one of the Outline views in the left sidebar (usually the All Tasks view.) Naming the tab "Outline"or "MyWorkspace" or "giraffe" has no effect whatsoever on how it works.

Hi Dwight,

Thanks for your help.  After posting this I came across an earlier tutorial on Workspaces that you had put together for another user.

I worked through that, and it was VERY helpful.  Thanks for taking the time to do that.  It has cleared up a lot of the confusion I had (Andrey should really add it to the user guide).  It really is helpful to see a worked out example, and I really like the work flow you presented.  MLO is making a lot more sense to me now.

One question.  Would you recommend pinning the first workspace (with the All Tasks outline view) to keep it at that leftmost position?  Seems like a good idea.

Pat

Pinning an All Tasks workspace to the leftmost tab position is definitely helpful.

Here's an old process I wrote up that might help explain some of the workflow possibilities. Ignore if it adds confusion :) http://stroyan.net/lisasblog/2012/mylifeorganized/
