Odd question from someone you may have thought disappeared (I'll try to write an update soon).

Has anyone ever come up with an effective combination of MLO and a paper notebook system (or freeform electronic journal) such as BulletJournal / DashPlus / Etc?  (http://bulletjournal.com/get-started/)

I've been very ill this year, incapacitated at times...but doing much better now (and back home! :). MLO fell by the wayside for new tasks and projects though I used it for daily routines and such. In the meantime I used a BulletJournal for capture as it was something my brain could handle (That sounds so sad, if you know me, but it wasn't as bad as all that. And hey, I have tons of raw book material written in longhand :).

I didn't use the BJ calendar since I do all that electronically. But I like paper for capturing tasks, notes, I also began taking graphical notes (http://images.lmgtfy.com/?q=graphical+notes) which seems to cement the information better in my brain.

But of course paper/free-form is not a good repository for access long-term.  Anyway, I like both, each have their strengths, and I've been pondering concocting and writing up some kind of method that integrates them both (And Evernote for non-tasks), but my brain hasn't quite put these ideas into a coherent picture yet. I'd love any thoughts you have.

(Looking forward to re-engaging with MLO soon!).

Hi, Lisa, nice to see your name again.

I can confirm the value of graphical notes, and also the value of photographs as a way of describing tasks.  I'm not doing any of that with paper, I can not usually keep good track of paper-based artifacts over a half day old. I,m using evernote, drawing into evernote with the stylus on my phone, taking photos into evernote, and making a lot of use of URLs in MLO task notes that point to entries in Evernote. If I were fond of taking notes on paper I would look into digitizing pens in order to get it onto my systems as soon as possible. Not sure if any of the digitizing pens work well enough to be useful though . . .

Hi Lisa, sorry to hear you haven't been so well.

Have you ever come across whitelines..

http://whitelines.se/link/print-papers/

They produce a number of products you can take notes with and send easily to a digital format.. the other option is something like a livescribe pen..

Hi Lisa,

I was wondering the other day what had happened to you! Glad to hear you're doing better and hope you can get back to regular contributions on this forum again.

Regarding MLO and note taking...

I was actually thinking about this myself this week. My setup is getting a bit of control as I realised that I was using different apps for ideas, reminders, lists, brainstorming, research, knowledge bases, document writing, quick reference notes etc etc. In total about 12 apps across desktop and mobile! Did I say a bit out of control? The problem is the apps are all great in different ways, and keep getting better. In terms of combining with MLO, I'm in the middle of stripping out anything that isn't a pure task/project. I want MLO to be solely for clearly defined actionable activity.

Rather than recommend one particular app I would take a different tack and suggest you might think about using something with voice to text capability. This has improved massively over the last six months with Siri and Google Now becoming the tools they always promised to be. From memory, I think you were on Android, and Google Docs have recently added dictation support to make it really easy to get down longer amounts of text - via both the mobile app and via the web interface. This might be a good option if you still having periods where you are incapacitated or limited to short bursts of energy.

Graphical notes: - I'm getting boring on this front but I'll say it anyway - please look at Scapple
Digitizing hand written paper notes: has to be Evernote
Converting analogue input to digital: Surface Pro + One Note becoming unbeatable
Outline notes and lists: I've rediscovered Workflowy recently and I'm totally in love with it (i'm a sucker for elegant, simple, design)
Paper notes: Moleskine notebook + Palomino Blackwing pencil (marriage made in heaven)

Good luck and good health :-)
