I started using flags to show myself, if a task is done quick or needs long time.
Yes, I know, "effort" ist exactly for this. But I'm a big fan of icons, pictures go to brain much faster than text. So I'm misusing flags for effort, because I can give them my own icons.

My suggestion: Give us the ability to define our own icons for effort (mabye also for other categories like importance), just like flags.

Use Automatic Formatting to set a different icon based on the amount of effort defined for the task.

It would be nice if this would carry through to the phone version.

Thanks for the answers, both points are good – actually, I hadn’t thought of automatic formating.

I tried flags and was excited that the icon showed up on PC and phone.

With automatic formating it works just the way I like – but not on my phone. So I change my suggestion: Please give as those automatic formating rules on the phone, too. Best way would be with sync.

Yes, agreed, I'd like my phone to be showing things more like my desktop app does.

Past discussions have suggested that MLO developers feared the cpu cost of this suggestion would make MLO unacceptably laggy and unresponsive. I'm guessing that with the 2017 generation of flagship phones (iPhone X, Note 8, Pixel 2) this would not be an issue. Could there be a way to enable this but disable it on phones too slow to handle it?
