This is my second go round with mlo. I stopped using it in March. I like it but it was getting difficult to use.

Now I'm back. The inbox thing still puzzles me. Number one, why is it so difficult to get items out of the inbox? It seems no matter what I do they are always there.

I have resorted to creating a seperate folder in the inbox to store my items so the inbox doesn't get cluttered. But this doesn't seem too efficient.

I don't know. I'm not at wits end yet but my GPS is set for it.

I see there are lots of methods and theories especially Lisa's.

Is there not a flag or property available to set a task to to put it somewhere? Am i missing something?

Thanks,

John

PS: I use android tablet and phone and PC.

Dear John,

not sure, whether I do underatand your problem, but moving tasks can simply be achieved by one of the following options:

Drag and Drop, or ...
Move to ... (see under Hotkeys ... for me it's CTRL M), or ...
Cut/Paste

Eberhard

I'm now the second John on this thread :)

I believe I'm seeing the same thing that John Cesta is seeing. I've used MLO for years and know that this isn't the intended functionality so I believe it's a new bug (I recall it happening only in the past month or so). It's either in the cloud sync services or the iPhone or Windows App (although it looks like John isn't using the iPhone app but the Android ones).

Here's what happens:

1 - I'll move items from my inbox to be subtasks of other projects. The inbox will be completely empty.
2 - I'll sync with the cloud
3 - And a point in the future I'll return to my inbox and all the tasks I moved are back
4 - Moving them makes the inbox empty.
5 - Syncing again and the tasks are back.
6 - Sometimes when this happens the tasks are phantom tasks only in the iPhone version but not the desktop version. For example, I'll have 10 tasks in my iPhone Inbox and 0 on my desktop app inbox. I will add a new task on my iPhone inbox making it 11 and that new task will sync over to the desktop app, where I'll now have 1 - proving to me that syncing is still trying to work. But those phantom 10 on the iPhone inbox (which were originally moved in the past but came back) are never seen by the desktop version.

The frustrating thing is this happens only sometimes. I have created new MLO local files and new Cloud files and for awhile everything works correctly. Then after awhile the issue described above happens again.

I installed iPhone version 2.8.0 with excitement hoping this would fix the issue but it didn't (or at least it didn't clean up the corrupt state I was now in).

MLO is amazing, the best task app ever and I have no doubt you'll figure this out soon and fix it (if it is a bug and not some odd user error I'm not aware of). So thanks in advance.

Even though I move my tasks into a project my projects display in the inbox. All my projects and tasks display in the Inbox. I have resorted to creating a folder in the I box called projects and one called tasks to move same to so the inbox isn't so cluttered.

Perhaps I just found out how to do this. I went into outline mode and created a folder called business tasks outside of the inbox. Then i moved my business tasks to this folder. Looks like they are out of the inbox.

John (Cesta),

Do you mean your active/open actions when you say Inbox? In MLO, the inbox is just a folder of tasks. You move a task out and it stays there until you manually move them back in.

In case you are synchronising between devices, there is a special folder called <Inbox> in which the tasks you add are stored initially, until you manually move them out to different projects or folders. I usually do not keep anything in my inbox for more than a day at the most.

Perhaps a screenshot of your setup would help us understand your problem better.

Thanks and regards,
Jay

Generally, I only put things in the inbox if I am trying to be fast and will resolve the actual placement later (typically after syncing to my computer).  Otherwise, I navigate to my folder structure and insert.

I think I get the inbox thing. I create tasks on my tablet and phone and they end up in the inbox (like any gtd app I used in the past) Then i need to actually move it to another folder. My original problem was I didn't have another folder OUTSIDE of the inbox now I do as in figure MLO 1A

Now however there are some projects in my inbox I can't seem to get rid of. If I delete them from the inbox they delete from the projects area. It's as if they are LINKED to the inbox. see the images MLO1 and MLO2

Thanks

Elizabeth,

Yes thanks. Makes sense. I've done this with my other GTD apps but the way I could MOVE stuff was to select a folder to MOVE it to. I see I can do this with my PC but there's no MOVE TO on my android devices. I have to cut the task and paste it where I want it. I think I will have to create some BEST PRACTICES like waiting till I am on my PC to actually organize stuff.

John,

Anything you delete from MLO is gone from all views. The "project area" you refer to is actually a view of all your tasks and folders marked as projects. Views are a powerful part of MLO to visualise your tasks and projects.
I would suggest you take a look at the demo template in MLO which will help you understand the task organisation better. In MLO, click on File -> New and select the "MyLifeOrganized - Demo File" from the drop-down (see screenshot).

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Jay

Jay,

Yea, ya know if you look at it long enough you begin to realize this. I guess it took my second go round to see it clearly.

I loaded up the GTD template and it makes a l lot of sense to me. Thanks,

John
