I just noticed that some tasks with long caption text (I did not measure which length but I suppose more than 256 characters...) entered on MLO 2 Android are accepted (after the press of the Done button and coming back to edit mode preserve all the characters already entered). But when you enter your device in sleep mode MLO silently syncs the database with the Cloud copy. Next time the long caption will appear trimmed.
Did someone of you experienced it?

Hi Roberto. I have not seen the phenomenon that you have described. The
closest that I have seen is using the Rapid Task Entry tool on
MLO/Windows, where a long caption will be truncated and the characters
after the truncation will be moved to the Notes area. There's a setting
in the Options tool for defining where the truncation will happen, mine
is set for 100 characters.

When this truncation happens for you, could you check in Notes to see if
the extra characters have gone there?

Hi Dwight.
I better investigated and I found that the Caption becomes truncated to 255 characters. It happens only after the sync. No truncation before, I navigated on various Views and before the sync happenned I found all the characters without any trim. It happens on the normal input, no need of Widget. Give a try.
Bye.

P.S.
No trimmed characters were copied on the note field.

A interesting observation:

On 1st of December I downloaded the MLO 2 trial. It was (I remember) the release 2.0.2.
On the 3rd of December I suscribed the Cloud Service for the firs time.
I then suddenly (3rd of December) archived a copy of the desktop file of MLO. I archived it just after the first Cloud sync. I supposed that it could be useful in the future.

Today I checked my archived copy.
I discovered that the long Captions were not trimmed! This is clearly visible because I had some long items on the MLO 1 that were imported on the MLO 2 at 1st of December, and then, on 3rd of December, on Desktop MLO without any trim. Thanks to this backup, I preserved a copy of the long texts, so today I suppose to have some losts only on the new Tasks made on December - very few with long texts, perhaps no one.

But now the same items not trimmed on December the 3rd, on the current MLO file have the Captions trimmed to 255 characters on the current archive. now I am running the 2.0.12.

Very interesting. This could mean that some changes happened in the meanwhile.

I also made another test: one moment ago I inserted a long item on MLO Desktop and synced it, no matter of MLO 2. Trimmed.
This means that the trim occurs as soon as I sync the data, no matter of MLO Desktop or Android.

So I suppose that some change on Cloud service has happened.

Any news on this?  This is a significant concern to me.  I am losing my text.  My words are there, and then...  they are gone.

I'm sending MLO support an email now.  I've lost a lot of text I think.  This is kind of equivalent to my data being partially, but significantly, corrupted.  This is not an insignificant failure.

I would like to know:

1)  If I revert to MLO Android v1 will this go back?  I'm guessing most probably not.  This seems to be an issue of the cloud synch.  But I just thought I'd ask.

2) Is this going to be fixed?  And when?

3) When did this change get introduced?  That way I could know what archive copy to refer to if I come across an old task and I want to "restore" it with a full copy.

Thank you,

Nathan

Hello Nathan, Roberto, Dwight,

Yes you are right. This is the restriction of MLO Cloud sync service. The table which contains tasks does contain a limit for the task title for 255 characters.

Answering your questions:

>1)  If I revert to MLO Android v1 will this go back?  I'm guessing most probably not.  This seems to be an issue of the cloud synch.  But I just thought I'd ask.
no, it is truncated on cloud side and synced back to any MLO client.

>2) Is this going to be fixed?  And when?
To keep cloud performance we do need to set a limit for the task title. We set it to 255 chars. All what is longer than 255 chars should be placed to notes by user.

>3) When did this change get introduced?  That way I could know what archive copy to refer to if I come across an old task and I want to "restore" it with a full copy.
It was introduced in the initial cloud version back in 2010 year and it was never changed. I do not remember that anyone for 6 years mentioned that it is a problem to have such limitation.

Maybe we need to rework the clients and copy the long task titles to the notes just before the sync. Or probably better to set the limit for the control not allowing 255+ chars in the task title to avoid the issue.

Thanks,
Andrey.

My favorite solution: whenever a task caption is created or edited to be over 255 characters, immediately truncate it and save the excess in the task note. Notify the user that this happened with something like a toast message
