Hi, I've been using mneumosyne for a few years and have over 10,000 cards (super helpful in med school!) I've had some trouble opening my cards recently though. I tried opening mnemosyne and it kept giving me an error message. I ended up uninstalling it and reinstalling it and this is what pops up when I try to open it now:

I have back-ups saved on an external hard drive, and I was looking through these files to try to figure something out when I found I had saved the application and could open that one (it's from 2010). I did so delightedly but it seems to automatically start up with my database from 2 months ago in September. I tried to open my back-up from yesterday but it's a bz2 file and when I try to extract it using the Universal Extractor it gives me this message:

Did I just lose 2 months of data? (I also have a ".CARDS" version that seems to have been up-dated yesterday, but it's 1,200 KB and the ".CARDS" back up from 2 months ago is 57,00 KB so I'm wondering if it's any good.. and I can't seem to import or open it in the 2010 application). And if I did lose that data, am I also now stuck using a 2010 version of mnemosyne? I can't seem to be able to get an up-dated version to open.

Sorry I seemed to have somehow made quite a mess of this. I'd really appreciate any help, I really enjoy this style of learning. Thanks,

Amanda

Sorry, I did screenshots of the error messages since they wouldn't let me copy and paste them and it was a lot to type. Tried copy and pasting in my previous message but that didn't work. I've attached them

From looking at the first error message it seems like the backup directory is write protected and mnemosyne could not make a media directory required.

To find out what version of mnemosyne your running click Help>about.

To check if your running

Hi,

Bz2 files were the backup files of Mnemosyne 1.x. In Mnemosye 2.x,
backup files are *.db files in the 'backups' subfolder of your
database, and you can just restore them using 'file - open' inside
Mnemosyne.

Mnemosyne by default loads the last database you used, so probably all
you have to do is reopen your regular database (not even a backup).
Typically this is in C:\users\Amanda\App
Data\roaming\Mnemosyne\default.db (The directory is hidden, so you
might need to tell Windows to show hidden files).

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks for the advice,

I followed the steps, told windows to show the hidden files, found the mnemosyne folder at the location you suggested looking in, but the only default.db folder is default.db_media and it's empty. I've attached a screen shot of the mnemosyne folder to show my options. Did I somehow install it wrong? Thanks again for the help

I'm not talking about a directory, just do 'file - open' and pick the
file 'default.db' you've found in your screenshot.

Cheers,

Peter

So the current application won't open, which means I can't click "file - open"

On my external hard drive I have an application that I guess I must have saved a few years ago (I don't even really know how I did that) but when I open that one and try to do "file - open" it will only let me open .mem databases. (Clicking the "Help - about" showed me it's version 1.2.2)

So basically I guess my problem now is I don't know how to get a current version of the application to open so that I can open the automatically saved database that you helped me find (I've already tried uninstalling mnemosyne and re-downloading it from the website, and the same error message I posted in my first post still appears)

Thanks again!

Delete the file 'config' in your Mnemosyne data directory and start again.

(This will no longer be necessary in 2.3)

Cheers,

Peter
