(Sourceforge , where the downloads are hosted, seems to be having some issues, but I guess those will be resolved soon...)

(Note for Windows 7 users: if you run into problems related to
missing api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0-dll make sure your machine
has the latest Windows patches and/or download this:

This might also help with other hard crashes.

Additionally, if you see a black screen, start Mnemosyne with the
--qt-opengl=desktop command line argument.)

Mnemosyne 2.4.1 : 2017-01-30

-Updated to PyQt 5.7.1.
-Fix broken cramming plugin (reported by stevengeorg).

Hi,

Did you use any command line arguments to start Mnemosyne?

Did you move any directories around? Normally, Mnemosyne uses ~/.mnemosyne and ~/.config/mnemosyne.

However, environment variables could affect this. This is the revelant code:

            home = os.path.expanduser("~")

            if "XDG_DATA_HOME" in os.environ:

                self.data_dir = os.environ["XDG_DATA_HOME"]

            else:

                self.data_dir = join(home, ".local", "share")

            self.data_dir = join(self.data_dir, "mnemosyne")

            if "XDG_CONFIG_HOME" in os.environ:

                self.config_dir = os.environ["XDG_CONFIG_HOME"]

            else:

                self.config_dir = join(home, ".config")

            self.config_dir = join(self.config_dir, "mnemosyne")

Cheers,

Peter

Thank you for your help, but I'm just starting to use Linux and I don't get almost any of it.
To start Mnemosyne i just typed 'mnemosyne' in the Terminal, following the README file instructions.
I didn't move directories, I only installed the dependencies and Mnemosyne following the README instructions, but I could never start the program. '~/.mnemosyne' and '~/.config/mnemosyne' are supposed to be folders? I haven't found them. I also don't know what I could do with that code.
Greetings!

Hi,

Directories starting with a dot are hidden, so you probably don’t see them.

If you do ‘cd .local/share/mnemosyne’ and type ‘ls’, do you see something? Similar for ‘.config/mnemosyne’. Also before you start Mnemosyne, best get out of the installation directory by typing ‘cd’ before you type ‘mnemosyne’.

Thanks, I found the directories. In /mnemosyne I found this: backups default.db default.db-journal default.db_media history plugins
And in .config/mnemosyne: config.db  config.py  machine.id  __pycache__

I was out of the installation directory when trying to enter the program.

Strange…

What happens if you start with

Mnemosyne –d .local/share/mnemosyne

i.e. the directory where you found default.db?

What is the output of

env | grep HOME

Hi,

Can you try this version, which will print out more debug information?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ud16x9chrtd4uld/Mnemosyne-2.4.1-debug.tar.gz?dl=0

You can also try deleting config.db and trying again.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi,

This version will spit out even more debug information:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ud16x9chrtd4uld/Mnemosyne-2.4.1-debug.tar.gz?dl=0

Don’t bother analysing/highlighting it, if it’s too big for the list just mail it to me.

Before you run it, could you delete /home/ocb/.local/share/Mnemosyne and /home/ocb/.config/Mnemosyne ?

I’ve also noticed you’re running Python 3.6, which I haven’t tried and which is not that old and perhaps has issues. Does running Mnemosyne on Python 3.5 help?

Hi,

After upgrading to 2.4.1 Mnemosyne doesn't display text placed between "<" and ">" characters ("less than" and "greater than"). I've made over 150 cards with CLI commands for my CCNA exam preparation. Now lot of them are broken. Same on my Linux laptop and on Android phone. Are you able to fix it?
However when I started making these cards (with some earlier version of Mnemosyne which was up-to-date about four months ago) I tried to use single quote characters but I have same symptoms then. Why actually are such "special" characters interpreted instead of just being displayed as simple text?

Hi,

The reason is that <> are interpreted as html tags. The best way to deal with this is to replace "<" by "<". This has actually been the case since Mnemosyne 2.0, so I don't think it's any recent change.

Cheers,

Peter

Perhaps there's still a zombie process running from your earlier attempts. The easiest is to restart the computer and see if that helps.

Thank you for the answer. Of course you're right. For some reason "<" character worked for me so I didn't notice that it should be interpreted. One more question: is there any way to perform mass update on my cards? For example to replace that "<" characters?

Hi,

If you do a development install of Mnemosyne as a Python library, you can run scripts like this:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~peter-bienstman/mnemosyne-proj/trunk/view/head:/mnemosyne/mnemosyne/example_scripts/find_and_replace.py

However, if you have “true” html in your cards, like img tags, a blind search-and-replace is probably not what you want.

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks for that hint, made my day ;-)

but unfortunately I've got a really worse problem with the new version (Windows). Why are the shortcuts disabled (???) - I'm old enough to know the worth of being able to use a program by keyboard very fast instead of having to search for the mouse :-<
(what a luck <ctrl>+n for "Add and next card" seem to work, so I miss "only" <ctrl>+b ("browse") and <ctrl>+a ("Add card") very hard.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this bug! I will look into it for the next release. BTW, it seems if you click outside of the Q and A windows, the shortcuts work, so I just have to make sure that the html widget does not eat the keypresses.

Actually,

After trying installing python3 dependencies in a few more creative ways I got it to work. However, I am now trying to sync my progress on my old phone with my newly fixed program, so I can sync those cards with my new phone, and I am encountering an indefinite "Archiving old logs" screen. How do I skip the "Archiving old logs" feature so I can sync?

Hi,

Make sure you are using the latest Mnemosyne from Google Play on your phone.

Cheers,

Peter

It seems I was in fact doing that (with 3.7). Is there something about
3.7 android up that will allow me to skip the Archiving old logs feature?

Best,

Neil

Hi,

The latest version on Google play is 1.3.6, so I'm not sure where you got 3.7 from.

HA! that was the number of million users! It looks like on my new phone
it's 1.3.6 and on my old one 1.3.5 I'll see if I can upgrade it on the
old one and then try syncing again.

Best,

Neil

Ok, Now I've upgraded to the latest and I still get the "Archiving old logs" indefinitely, without the ability to skip and sync.

Hi Peter,

That helped. I didn't need to do a full uninstall, because I was transferring to a new phone. It turns out I just needed to copy my phones database into the directory of my upgraded app and it worked. Hit a little snag on the way because it turns out that directory is no longer ~/.mnemosyne but ~/.local/share/mnemosyne but now I'm sorted.

Thanks

-Neil

Hi Peter

Just upgraded to the 2.4.1 version. Apparently there is not sound after the upgrade anymore. Any idea what that could be?
Thanks in advance for you answer.

Best Regards

Hi,

From which version did you upgrade? What is your OS? Does uninstalling and reinstalling help?

Cheers,

Peter

Stupid me ;)
I went from 2.3.6 to 2.4.1. The OS is macOS Sierra 10.12.4. I've tried to remove the mnemosyn app and add it again without any luck.
I can recall that few versions ago there was similar issue. I believe it was fixed by adding mplayer to the mnemosyne build.

I just did small test. One can actually see package content quite easily on the OSX. Indeed the mplayer is missing in the Resources directory. I even tried to copy it there but that didn't help.

Hi El_Pablo

I believe I've fixed the issue and uploaded a new dmg to source forge. Sorry about the bug, I missed checking that the media player was working during the latest build.
