We are pleased to share the first public version of ComputerCraftEdu!

Intro:

ComputerCraftEdu is a unique way to teach programming and computational thinking to Minecraft players that are new to coding.  They will use a tile-based interface to learn the fundamentals of programming languages inside a fun and familiar environment -- Minecraft!

The coolest feature we’ve added are friendly mechanical turtles that can be easily programmed to do whatever players want.  Learners will explore ways to use turtles to automate and extend their Minecraft activities.  And while most players will begin by programming graphically, at any time they can switch to working with the actual code (LUA scripting).  We believe this process will serve as a springboard for learners towards using real programming languages to solve problems, be creative, and improve their lives!

More Information:

Features:

  • Mechanical turtles that can:

    • dig

    • build

    • fly

    • use redstone

    • examine / compare

    • more!

  • Visual programming tool

    • designed to be familiar to Minecraft pros

    • supports concepts such as:

      • conditionals

      • loops

  • More!

Download:

Setup:

  • MinecraftEdu users can simply activate ComputerCraftEdu in the ‘Mods’ menu of the MinecraftEdu Launcher.

  • To install manually, place the downloaded mod file in these locations:

    • /minecraftedu/minecraft/mods/1.7.10/

    • /minecraftedu/servertool/server/mods/1.7.10/

  • Make sure to delete previous versions of ComputerCraft or CCEdu, and any config files.

Notes:

This mod represents a great collaboration between Dan200 (the original creator of ComputerCraft) and the gang at TeacherGaming, with the support of some of our awesome inner-circle testers, namely Shane Asselstine, Stephen Elford, Matt Coia, Michael Harvey, (apologies to whoever I'm forgetting). It's been a truly fascinating process as we've tried out several different approaches to the Visual Programming Interface, tested our assumptions, and refined the mod.

We can't wait to see what you think!  Please share your feedback and bug reports in this thread!

30 minutes of browsing through the canyon made me 30 times more excited bringing this into my classroom.
I love the story-mode of the map, introducing me to the different commands. I am a complete programming newbie, but this was so wonderfully self explainable.
The new simplified programming help-system will also be a miracle worker for me. That is why I never was able to fully do successful classes. Simply cause I could not help the more advanced students.

I can't wait for next school year
(and tomorrow is the last day of this year)

Thanks you wonderful wonderful people.

Oh my gosh, I am SOOOO excited about this.  I have the next few days off before heading to ISTE, so you can bet I will be playing with this and getting it ready to incorporate into next year's classes!

I got to try it on the tour, and this makes my life so much easier! (and more enjoyable)  My students are going to love working with this!

Thanks,
Diane

Your instructions say it is compatible with MinecraftEDU 1 7 10 build 20.  When I looked at the MinecraftEDU downloads the latest I see is development version 19. Where can I find build 20?

You are right. Stable build 20 has not been released yet. We got a bit ahead of ourselves.

But the mod will still work with any recent version MCEdu. The only thing you will be missing is the teacher menu to control turtles.

The new version will hopefully be released this week.

This looks fantastic!

This may be very early days, but will teachers be able to possibly change the model of the turtle to a character (in this case a wildlife ranger) or anything else? If a wildlife ranger then technically you could send your "team" of rangers on patrols across Minecraft landscapes programmatically to look for widlife / find snares or just report what they found so you can log it into a database? (This will all make sense when I post about an upcoming Edu project related to wildlife conservation, awareness and learning).

Just jumping ahead head because the opportunities to have your own programmed teams of rangers is absolutely stunning.

Kind regards,

Alasdair

Hello everyone!  I'm having trouble downloading the mods. I watched this tutorial and did everything it says but when I get into the game and hit "E" to open my inventory and look for turtles, nothing is there. When I click the arrow to go the second part of the inventory, the program crashes.

This happened with Graphing map I got from Shane/Mister A. When we took the mods off, it worked fine.

Any help or suggestions would be welcome!  Thanks in advance!  Pam

Hello Elfie!

Thanks for the quick reply!

Right now I'm away from school and I'm using the MCEdu on my home computer that I got from John Miller's website (trial license).

I'm using MinecraftEdu Launcher 1.7.10 stable version build 12.

Mods: ComputerCraft (1.74pr36) and ComputerCraftEdu (1.74pr36) both Client and Server Mods.

Java Version 7 Update 67 (build 1.7.0_67-b01)

Also, if it matters, I'm running this on my home computer which is a Mac.  But I'm having the same issues at school which is PC based.

This is what I get.  :(

Thanks for the help! Pam

Here's where I have trouble, when I get to inventory. No turtles. :(  Then when I click the right upper arrow to go to the next part of inventory, the game crashes.

OK I will take my best stab at this... It appears that ComputerCraft and CCEdu are not actually installed on the server, can you please confirm that they are ticked in the server mods area in the launcher, if they are, try using the 'select all' button a couple of times, there have been intermittent issues with the mod 'checks' not working correctly. Then start your server up again.

Hopefully that fixes it, if it doesn't we probably need to try a completely fresh install.

Elfie.

Definitely sounds like a server-side issue. Perhaps you can scan the server log (advanced tab of the server launcher) for any mention of CC/CCE? I assume the server continues to work after the game crashes. Could you attach client crash log too?

Excellent! I used this with a lot of kids (a couple even as young as 4!) and even some adults at a MakerFaire over the weekend.  While at first somewhat disappointed it wasn't a free build, kids really got into the Canyon World!  I love the sense of discovery for controlling the turtles.  I was able to offer help as needed, but open end enough for the older kids to try different things including a lot of falling in to the giant lava lake, until some started building some pretty good bridges with there turtle.  A few student attempted to build up to the platforms too and a few attemtped using more than one turtle to do their bidding!  Great Work guys!!!

Hello Michael and Elfie.

Got it to work after doing what Elfie said.

Took a look around.  Looks cool.

Couple questions.

The description at http://services.minecraftedu.com/worlds/node/120 says in Zone 1 students interact with the turtle robot to clear the path.  I see a chest but it is empty.  Am I, the teacher, supposed to give students the robots?

Then in Zone 2 it says students enter the Canyon and "discover" more robots? When I go in, I don't see any? Is this because I'm in teacher mode?  Sorry, new to MinecraftEdu.

Also, having trouble reconnecting to my server from the launcher.  I get error message Lost Connection. See screenshot below.

I took screenshots of the server launcher as Michael asked.  Here it is.

and

Also, downloaded the MinecraftEdu for my nephew. Wanted him to try out the Turtle Canyon in student mode.  Only when he gets the modes, he gets a different version than me?  I got 1.74pr36 and he gets 1.74pr19. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Pamela,
It sounds to me like you still do not have the mod enabled on the server side. Installing it on the client side is not enough. Here's an easy test to confirm this: Put yourself into creative mode. Do you see the CCEdu tab on the second page? If so, put a turtle into your hotbar. If you place it on the ground does it immediately disappear? This happens because the client knows about the mod but the server does not. If you try that test and get different results, let us know.
You and your nephew of course need to be using the same version of the mod. You should use the 1.74 version that was released today. All of the pre-release versions (pr46, pr19, etc.) have bugs or missing features and should be discarded. The reason that the server let you both in the first place is again because the server is not running the mod so it was not checking for it. Having extra mods on the client usually will not cause problems other than that the content the mod provides (ie. turtles) will not work in any way.
So again, to solve this you need to place the mod file in the server mods directory. This directory is minecraftedu/servertool/server/mods/1.7.10
Best of luck,
Mike

Thank you Michael, for your thoughtful and quick response.

Yes, I have both the client side and server side mods checked.

I got rid of the 1.74pr36 mods and downloaded the new 1.74 mods that you said were released today. I got the missing blocks message again. :(  I wasn't getting that message with the 1.74pr36.

Reinstalled the Canyon map.  That didn't help.

Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Hi all, Just want to chime in here. I agree either the mods are mismatched or perhaps not installed server side.  However, could the lost connection to the server be a separate issue?  This is the same error I got when trying to connect a few machines to the serve via the wifi IP the server pulled at a location outside my school.  I thought perhaps their might have been constraints on the WIFI we were accessing, so ultimately I created an offline network, with a self assigned IP address to the server machine.  Then using the direct connect and manually typing in the IP, it took a couple of tries but I got the clients to connect without changing any other MCEdu settings

Not sure if that help or if any one else has encountered that lost connection error.  It is not the first time it has happened to me and I always felt it was due to something with the network or wifi connection.

Thanks Lisa.

Got my connection to finally work.

Also, I was getting the error message saying there were missing blocks after updating the mod. But when I went in, it seems to be working now as I see the turtles and they seems to be functioning!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. :D

Hello! This is a wonderful update and I am super excited to use it in my classroom. However I was testing it out today and ran into a problem, and was wondering if it was myself or something in the coding itself. I can edit programs in the beginner turtles, but when I attempt to edit in the regular turtle I get a blank black screen that won't allow me to edit. Is this set up for this to happen?

Thanks,
Justin

It is set up correctly. Turtles (and the other non-Edu ComputerCraft blocks have been around much longer than Beginner's Turtles. You interact with them by typing commands, like a terminal. The "blank screen" you see probably also has a command prompt (>) in the top corner. This is to indicate that it is ready for a command. If you work with younger students, you'll probably find that you can teach a full coding curriculum just with Beginner's Turtles. However, if you'd like to explore the more advanced side of the mod, there are tutorials available here: http://computercraft.info/wiki/Tutorials

I just updated to 1.7.10 build 20, and am getting a message when I try to load "Turtle Canyon"

After I hit CONFIRM the game loads just fine, and I was able to play as a student. I just wonder if missing blocks will cause any parts of this world to function abnormally. I tried suggestions posted here to toggle on/off the mods, and still get the same message. My server mods are listed below:

Any idea why I'm getting this message, and whether  I should be concerned?

Thanks,
Joel S.

Hey Joel,

This message usually pops up if the person that uploaded the map did so with a mod installed that you do not have installed.

I would think that as long as you have CC and CCedu installed on your machines and run the Turtle Canyon...you will be fine.

Ya, I really need to go back and do more work on the turtle canyon map, soon.  There's a number of small issues to fix.  And lots of people would like a non-minecraftEdu version, which I'd love to make happen.  It's just hard to rethink how it's all supposed to work with full building enabled (since the whole concept is that students need to use turtles to progress).

I'd love some honest feedback I'll try to play with some ideas in the coming weeks.

Also, anyone should feel free to remix the map and share it back to the community!

This is just crazy cool.  I'm going to start using it with an after school computer club immediately then offer this for Hour of Code for all 3rd-5th students later on.  Your work on creating this map makes it that much easier to get started using ComputerCraftEdu in the next few weeks.  Timing is everything!!  Thank you and well done.

Truly awesome map Joel!

I tested it this morning with 17-20 yo old students and they worked for 2,5 hours nonstop trying to escape from the canyon just to see there wasn't anything on the other side :D

What never stop amaze me is that these old guys never read signs or instructions, even though you try to tell them. Even though I had them freeze and explained they search the "stairs up" demo turtle to get the code. doh! If there's a way to prevent them to get out 20 turtles I'd be happy. One turtle (at a time) would make them more start thinking about code.

Thanks for the feedback! You could always break the turtle-giving machine and then only give one turtle to each student. But that's a bit clunky. I can't think of a way to automatically limit each player to only one turtle in the world.

Also I've found that younger kids like to program a new turtle for each task. I think it's easier for them to think of it as programming different robots. Rather than building a library of programs. So there might be some benefit to multiple turtles. Besides, I like it when the canyon starts filling with lots of busy turtles. :)

Karl,
I agree with Joel's suggestions. It may be best to let them use the world as designed. I know you've used my map as well, but I'm not sure if it's the same group of students. Keep in mind, and I think Joel would agree, Turtle Canyon is designed to be more of a introduction than Turtle Island.  It's also much more open-ended. You are of course welcome to modify the world any way you see fit for your students who are much older.
If you want to limit students to one turtle each, or one turtle at a time, this is easily done with custom npc's. You probably already have the mod installed. If you want to see how it works, you can use the NPC Wand item on any of the item givers in my world.

Well it was the first time I used the map so I didn't know what to espect. To destroy the turtle machine would be one option, more because I'd like the students to really start think programming due to their age and their education. Just to use two turtles as a climbing stair ain't that hard. Else I agree, I love the sight of all the turtles!

Michael,
Yes it was the same group and "unfortunately" we started with Joel's map and didn't have enough time for yours. What I saw of both maps blow me away and I want to really did into them both asap I get a chance. Questions which did pop up in Joel's map you have excercises to do in your map, so I felt I started with the right world.

I'll have to try the customNPC thing.

Joel,
You could learn one thing from Michael. At least in the old Turtle Islands there were a lot of closed areas, areas where you gather the students until you let them run to the next area. That's something I miss here. I'd like to have a secure area at spawn point so everyone waits and start to run at the same time, when everyone had logged in. To freeze is not really an option as there's always a bit stress cos there's always someone struggle with the log in.

To have them wait for a second and also have a chance to talk with them for a second will be useful. When they are at the same spot.

My experience of students this age is they rarely reads instructions, to have them stop for a second would also be valuable in the demo area. Before they will be able to add a pickaxe you could have the second and last gate just to be sure they have seen all the demos and copy the code if needed. It was the same in the Turtle Island museum, they run through the floors, did the quiz. They're typical male, instructions are for fools :(

I know I can add this to the world myself, but it feels easier if it's already there and I instead can remove it when needed. And next time I'll add mobs as well :)

I started using the CodeCraft Hour of Code release, and students in my classroom can delete each other's programs from the server. Has anyone else ran into this or have a work around for it.  Freezing students or taking away build powers seems ineffective...

Thanks!

Do you mean ComputerCraftEdu? I'm not sure what CodeCraft is. Can you share a link?

If you DO mean CCEdu, then I'm still a bit confused. Are you saying students are able to purposefully (or accidentally) delete other students' programs? If so, students can lock their programs with the little lock icon on the bottom left. Although it seems to me that this might be better handled OUTSIDE of the game. Lead your students in a discussion about respecting other people's workspaces and privacy.

Or do you mean there is a bug that's causing programs to be lost? If so, more details please! How does it happen?

~Joel

I did mean ComputerCraft Edu sorry.

The students are on a classroom server setup by our IT department (server in-room). When students create a program it shows up on all of the turtles.  Students are then able to edit/delete the programs that other students created as they are visible in the program list on the remotes.

I tried playing with the lock on the teacher account for programs, but it seemed to switch into demo mode? Does the lock work differently for students? One of my TAs reported the issue to me this evening. New programs showing up in the program list, were able to be deleted by anyone. It was very successful and very quick.

We are preparing to run a middle-grades computing workshop and my TAs were trying to see how much mischief students could get into as we usually have a few overly-enthusiastic students.  We are hoping students don't realize they can delete each others projects, however, accidents do happen, and my TAs figured it out within 5 minutes of playing.

We tried looking in the file system on the computers (client and server) to see where the turtle programs could have been stored and try to modify it so students could only see their own programs, but we were unsuccessful.

Veronica,

I believe your issues are coming from each student not having their own turtle, and attaching the remote to it.

You may have given them a turtle that was connected to someone already.

The best way to give out the turtle is through the teacher menu.
1. Give them a beginner turtle
2. Give them a remote
3. Have them place the turtle, then with remote in hand right click on the turtle

Let us know if that fixes your issue.

I don't think that is the issue here.

Veronica, it sounds like so far your TA is the only "player" logged onto the server. When the TA opens up each turtle, he sees the same programs on all of them, correct?
This is because turtles have two states: bound to a player, and unclaimed.

As soon as a player right-clicks on a new, unclaimed turtle, it becomes "theirs". This means that their programs will be viewable on it.
The reason your TA is seeing his programs on all the turtles is because he is the owner of all the turtles. Ask him to try testing this with two accounts signed in simultaneously and it will not take long to understand the behavior.
To prevent this, new turtles should be activated by their owners before anyone else.
When I set up worlds with turtles already in place, they are typically in Demo mode so that players can see a program I wrote for them. By the way, the lock is a 3-way toggle: locked/demo/unlocked.

If you want each student to access their own programs and not be able to alter anyone else's, MisterA's method. As Joel mentioned, it's also important to explain expectations ahead of time to students too. If the teacher places 20 turtles in a circle, for each player, it's theoretically possible for one "mischievous" player to run around and claim them all. This can be prevented by expecting responsible behavior from players or by giving turtles out directly using the teacher menu.

It's also possible that the problem is with the map, itself. I was not able to test it extensively with multiple players, unfortunately.

Since the turtles were already placed on the map by me, they might accidentally "share" the same library. I can make a change to the map that should work around the problem, but it will need to wait until later this afternoon.

I'll post when I've made the update.

Yes, all of the turtles did have the same ID.  We have one of the TAs going around to give students a new Beginner's Mining Turtle which solved the problem of linked turtles.  Thank you, everyone for your help.

Okay, that's helpful information! And my daughter helped me find a couple other issues today. I'm going to be releasing an updated version tonight.

I'll post here when done.

Okay, I have uploaded a new version to the World library that I THINK should avoid the shared-library problem. I changed the way students first get their turtles.

If anyone feels like testing (especially with multiple players), I'd love to hear the results!

Will there be any other videos coming out to show how to use all of the other functions in the turtles?  I have watched all the tutorial videos and my students are becoming very proficient digging, building, and using the repeat function.  But as I scrolled down, there were more commands that were not featured on the tutorial videos.  Is there a link explain it all?  We had been waiting for the turtles to come out and our students and parent community have loved that we are now using them in the classroom!

Steve, maybe this could be something handled by the community? Are there particular commands you are interested in learning about?
There are folks here, self included, who would be happy to make some short videos.

Joel, I'll test Turtle Canyon with 24 students for Hour of Code and let you know how it goes!

Steve, no plans right now. But I/we might do something informally, or maybe the EduCrew can help (hint hint!). What specifically are you curious about?

Michael, awesome! I'd love any feedback you have!

Does anyone have a way to save off just the programs that students created and transfer those to a new world?  I'd like to extend the learning that happened from this semester but in a new map.  Ours kind of got out of control with 3 classrooms and tons of turtles all sharing the same huge map.  I had one student that got his turtle to build a house with a roof and door but his algorithm was block by block.  I'd like him to be able to keep that, find the repetition and insert loops.  I had another student that discovered functions on his own (inserting a program into another).  Having a library of basic functions to call would be neat to have but I don't want to have to create those with each new world.  My 1st-5th graders really enjoyed this.

Probably a bit late as Hour Of Code has already started. I have just tested with my daughter tonight (lesson planning) before tomorrow's education with a bunch of teachers who has never ever played MInecraft before. We have this project funded by the Finnish board of education 2015-2016 so I guess there will be a challenge to make it happen :D

If you want I can give you feedback afterwards.

Ashley, you can copy all programs from one world file to another by copying the "computer/library" folder within it.

My guys are pretty good with the REP function.  If there could be more videos on the rest of the like the IF, WHILE, THEN, ELSE IF, TO, BRK.  Maybe just walking through all the buttons and show how to use them would be great and then I can think of how my guys can use them more.  I currently teach 3rd graders and they are getting pretty good with the basic commands.  I find myself just a day ahead of them of what I know and then teaching them.  Thanks for the responses everyone!

Just looking at some ideas here for my student's Minecraftedu programming course. Currently investigating the Turtle Island 1.5 world to start off with as it seems to have a variety of challenges. But this topic specifically discusses Turtle Canyon. Any advice on which one to use?

Turtle Island is much more involved and includes lots of challenges and areas to work with. Turtle Canyon was designed as an introduction to ComputercraftEDU and the turtles and is very basic in nature.

I just started an intro to programming for our 16-17 years old students as they struggle with the concept of construct code. As they have to write so many rows of code to see what is happening I thought I have to give them some quick feedback --> therefor MinecraftEDU and ComputerCraftEDU.

We started with the "Hour of Code" map, just because they needed to understand what a turtle is and how you do the very basics. Then we moved to this Turtle Canyon and they again had some problems, mostly because they ignored signs and any information. And of course, which is actually brilliant: hunger!

But as Matt says, it's very basic in nature and you kind of have to remind them to do actual code and not use 2 turtles as "stairs" to jump up with.

In my case my students has to do more advanced programming later on so I have to remind them give it a chance to really take that extra minute, while they have the chance, to construct real code.

Next step is the Turtle Island and by then they will regret not taken any notes or saved any links :D
