We are pleased to share the first public version of ComputerCraftEdu!
Intro:
ComputerCraftEdu is a unique way to teach programming and computational thinking to Minecraft players that are new to coding. They will use a tile-based interface to learn the fundamentals of programming languages inside a fun and familiar environment -- Minecraft!
The coolest feature we’ve added are friendly mechanical turtles that can be easily programmed to do whatever players want. Learners will explore ways to use turtles to automate and extend their Minecraft activities. And while most players will begin by programming graphically, at any time they can switch to working with the actual code (LUA scripting). We believe this process will serve as a springboard for learners towards using real programming languages to solve problems, be creative, and improve their lives!

Download:
MinecraftEdu users can download directly using the Mods button on the launcher, under "Online Mods".
Manual download:
ComputerCraftEdu version 1.74pr36 - https://www.dropbox.com/s/in25j2rsbgkyno3/ComputerCraftEdu_combined_1.74pr36.jar?dl=0
Requires either:
MinecraftEdu version 1.7.10 Stable Build 20 (or higher)
compatible Forge 1.7.10 installation of original Minecraft.
Setup:
MinecraftEdu users can simply activate ComputerCraftEdu in the ‘Mods’ menu of the MinecraftEdu Launcher.
To install manually, place the downloaded mod file in these locations:
/minecraftedu/minecraft/mods/1.7.10/
/minecraftedu/servertool/server/mods/1.7.10/
Make sure to delete previous versions of ComputerCraft or CCEdu, and any config files.
This mod represents a great collaboration between Dan200 (the original creator of ComputerCraft) and the gang at TeacherGaming, with the support of some of our awesome inner-circle testers, namely Shane Asselstine, Stephen Elford, Matt Coia, Michael Harvey, (apologies to whoever I'm forgetting). It's been a truly fascinating process as we've tried out several different approaches to the Visual Programming Interface, tested our assumptions, and refined the mod.
We can't wait to see what you think! Please share your feedback and bug reports in this thread!
But the mod will still work with any recent version MCEdu. The only thing you will be missing is the teacher menu to control turtles.
The new version will hopefully be released this week.

Michael,
Yes it was the same group and "unfortunately" we started with Joel's map and didn't have enough time for yours. What I saw of both maps blow me away and I want to really did into them both asap I get a chance. Questions which did pop up in Joel's map you have excercises to do in your map, so I felt I started with the right world.
I'll have to try the customNPC thing.
Joel,
You could learn one thing from Michael. At least in the old Turtle Islands there were a lot of closed areas, areas where you gather the students until you let them run to the next area. That's something I miss here. I'd like to have a secure area at spawn point so everyone waits and start to run at the same time, when everyone had logged in. To freeze is not really an option as there's always a bit stress cos there's always someone struggle with the log in.
To have them wait for a second and also have a chance to talk with them for a second will be useful. When they are at the same spot.
My experience of students this age is they rarely reads instructions, to have them stop for a second would also be valuable in the demo area. Before they will be able to add a pickaxe you could have the second and last gate just to be sure they have seen all the demos and copy the code if needed. It was the same in the Turtle Island museum, they run through the floors, did the quiz. They're typical male, instructions are for fools :(
I know I can add this to the world myself, but it feels easier if it's already there and I instead can remove it when needed. And next time I'll add mobs as well :)
