Hi,

Can someone help me in finding material regarding the possibility that a student can actually get the "right" answer with the "wrong" algorithm procedure?

I am a linguist who is working on word problems. Here is the project proposal:

Thanks in advance

Try to connect with Barry Kort in facebook.

Computers in the most early days had the most problems with wordproblems. That is an abandoned strand of research now?
Probably because words can be metaphors too.

I would also contact the AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges). For many years, they ran a regular feature in their journal called "Luck Larry" where a fictitious student used all the wrong mathematics but by sheer luck and coincidence, always came up with the right answer!  --  Fred

The classic: Reduce 16/64. Cross out the 6s and you have the answer.

Thank you CLIME Guy, that one was straight.

As a linguist, I feel amazed on how common is this for you
mathematicians, but how unexpected it is for people who deal with
language...

Seems like we linguists, definitely have a solid, wrong comprehension
of numerical shared properties...when looking at numeral use on word
problems.
