Hi Hrushikesh.

Hadfield or Austenitic Manganese steels are very specific to few good foundries.Welding of this grade of steel (mostly casting) requires specific skill, welding electrode selection and control of welding parameters. Here're some general guidelines on welding of this alloy. What grade Hadfield steel is being welded? what's the section thickness involved. These  are some of the key variables in  successful welding of this grade of steel.

You may contact these manufacturers for welding consumables and further info.

Thanks.

Hi Hrushikesh,

What's the issue in welding Hadfield steel?

I will try to help you.

Main problem observed is start-stop point crack in specially SMAW. And PT is getting difficult to clear. Highly skilled welder is employed. So that possibility is ruled out of his ability and skill. Is this material prone to crack at start stop points only?

Hi,

This material is highly prone to cracking when the base metal crosses certain temp.

Universally adopted method is to sink 3/4 the of base meat in a water trough & weld. While welding the base metal I.P. temp should be less than 100 deg. C.

This will definitely avoid cracking.

Check the grade of base metal & the same is available in SMAW consumables with all the manufacturers.

There are two type welding involve in Hadfield Steel(12-14% Mn steel or its alloy).

1)Joining of two similar grade (HADFIELD TO HADFIELD) OR DIFFERENT GRADE (HADFIELD TO OTHER GRADE STEEL).

2) Overlaying on Hdfield steel.

For joining of Hadfield to Hadfield or overlaying on headfield - We have to take care ony IPT. For this we can be used any water cooling arrangement as per job geometry.

For dissimilar welding we have to takecare material properties and welding behaviour of both material . We are enclosing very interesting youtube clip (Welding of Hadfield to EN-31 material). During welding we were trying to cooldown Hadfield , while for EN31 material we were maintaining PHT and IPT up to 250 digree C.

Thanks

Sir,
Thank you for the input.

Till now we carried out welder quickly quali. We are facing problem in PT. Though we are hv smoothly grounded the crater points at start stop locations.
