Hi All,

Hope you are all doing well.  Sometimes I think about what we were doing a year ago ... lit review??

I have recently been tasked with researching "the classroom of the future" ... If I recall, some of had researched this and/or were aware of resources on this topic.

If you focused on this at any point in MALT, I'd love to have a look at your research ... if you have resources on this, I'd love to have a read.

Thanks in advance for sharing!

Joel

Hey Joel,
I did a very quick search and found these by David Thornburg.

I heard a presentation by him at CUE last year - and he has really great ideas. ...

Enjoy and hope you are well,
Best,
Cathy

Hey Joel,

Good to hear from you... I will look at other resources, but Cuban always is up for sharing his opinion/predictions!

We talked a little about learning spaces and the "classroom" of the future in our spring AR class. There was a chapter of the 21st Century Skills book that dealt with designing learning environments. (Just looked up the chapter - it was chapter 6.). Basically, flexibility is the watchword.

If it's possible, I would recommend that you expand the scope of your project include all of the learning spaces that a student needs, which would includes space and resources outside the classroom for individual and group work. I don't know if this is a problem at your school, my school is sorely lacking non-classroom space for students.

With our version of a block schedule, a student on typical 6/8 schedule has over 6 hours of school time where they are not in a classroom. Right now the only learning support space the students have is our library, which is not designed for social learning. The 1:1 program helps, but my students could benefit from non-teacher directed group space.

As you all know...I am an advocate of STEAMx (x = Computer Science) and with this being Computer Science week I am sharing STEM/CS information.

For PDF's of research summaries and infographics regarding the future of Computer Science, Education Policy, and Practice please see http://www.tcs.com/Insights/Pages/Strategies-Computer-Science-Education-US.aspx#

Key Takeaways

  • Leaders across sectors must join forces and align their efforts in supporting successful initiatives to advance computer science education at a national and regional levels.
  • Computer science must be counted toward high school graduation requirements at the state level.
  • Big and small businesses can, and should, join together to influence public policy and education reform.
  • Nonprofit initiatives, which provide education, coaching and mentoring pathways to millions of students and youth are critical to addressing the need for skilled programmers.
  • Corporate America must ignite students’ interest in computer science by collaboratively spreading the word about the opportunities available through volunteer programs.
