I’m having trouble locating metallic red spray paint. I’ve checked Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace, Michael’s. I have only found the little Tamyia cans at Sheldon’s Hobbies. Any other suggestions for the South Bay Area?

Krylon makes a metallic red :: various sellers here.  If you mean metal flake, I can't find any such thing...

Well...what about House Of Kolor?

Steve

PS. I think you can get it from Amazon, too, but I used to get 4oz bottles from TCP. Candy colors, and spray over their silver flake. I also used their Kosmic Clear, but that's a catalized urethane and requires caution in use.

But a coat of rattle can urethane would work just fine.

I’ve purchased it at both Ace Hardware and O’Reilly Auto.

Sorry, HOK....I think they're really owned by Valspar.

Still really good paint, and tons of colors/options.

I got mine from Oreilly Auto and use a harbor freight paint gun to spray it: https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/paint-shop/dupli-color-paint-shop-1-quart-metallic-paint/dpl6/bsp212

Dupli-color is also good paint, but I really like HOK the best. Having said that, Dupli-color makes killer florescent paint. And yeah, I use Harbor Freight sprayers, too. Back in the day, they had really decent touch up guns for cheap. Less than $20. If I didn't get them cleaned out quick enough and some catalized clear set up, you could just toss 'em. They had like 6oz tanks or something... Had to refill them a couple times on a large 4" airframe, but they worked really well for the price. Just as good as a couple $150+ guns I had (which all eventually died, too).

But I suspect you're looking for a rattle can. So yeah, try an automotive store or ACE hardware.

I always used Duplicolor paint and Krylon for primer. If you want a true metalic, use a Duplicolor silver undercoat, Just used a cheap Harbor Freight sprayer, be sure to thin the paint with acetone. It takes time to learn, in this case, it was silver. Those that knew me at  Snow Ranch, knew my paint jobs :) This is the Bad Azz Rocketry Defender if I remember right.

Correction, this was a Duplicolor gold undercoat and a Duplicolor Color Paint Shop candy red.

Useful thread. Now I have places to look for some metal flake clear coat I can spray on fiberglass airframes.

Greg, you've got great suggestions already, but those require a sprayer, and a compressor, and a paint booth...

Did you look at auto parts stores? O'Reilly, Pep Boys, etc?

You can also check art supply stores. They carry a very different selection of brands than hardware and auto parts stores. I particularly liked Montana Cans Gold spray paints, for it dries quickly, doesn't have a tendency to develop "paint herpes", and cures in only 6-8 hours. It also works well with generic Rustoleum filler primers as a base.

I never used their Metallic Effects spray paint, but you might want to give them a try and let us know how it worked: https://www.dickblick.com/products/montana-metallic-effect-spray/

The ones I used were their regular Gold line of spray paint: https://www.dickblick.com/products/montana-gold-acrylic-professional-spray-paints/

I can also highly recommend their varnish: https://www.dickblick.com/products/montana-varnish-sprays/

While I put links to a Blicks website (good place to buy spray paints online in general), the closest Blicks store is in Berkeley; a bit too far if you are looking for a local store. But there are a few other stores in South Bay and on the Peninsula that carry them. In particular University Arts in Redwood City and California Art Supply Company in San Mateo are the two I know of and frequent. The latter in particular has a very wide selection of spray paints.

One way or the other, give them a call before you go there to check if they have particular colors in stock.

Oh, and also, acetone in a spray can is awesome for cleaning spray can caps, so they don't end up clogged by the time you want to use them again. Just put the cap on it, and spray it into a paper towel. Takes all of 5 seconds to clean caps after a paint session.
