Well I just tried on the IOS app and it felt a lot simpler. Choosing my date of birth was not a life-sapping labyrinth. But then I had to agree to their terms and conditions and privacy statement. When I double tapped on this, it wouldn’t tick the box, instead it took me into safari and to their terms and conditions and privacy statement. I closed this, and tried again, but sure enough, the same thing happened. After multiple attempts, I browsed through the 43 pages of terms and conditions and privacy statement to see if the checkbox was actually on that website, but of course it wasn't. I admit I didn’t read all that text fully, but it wouldn’t surprise me if it said in there that they don’t allow blind people into their app, and that they take privacy so seriously that they’ve taken the liberty of hiding the agree checkbox. I tried double tapping and holding, but the same thing happened. I then tried turning VoiceOver off, and putting my finger down on the bit of the screen where this supposed checkbox is meant to be. I didn’t expect this to work, but was surprised to find, upon turning VoiceOver back on, that the checkbox was now ticked. So it turns out that if you can trick them into thinking you’re not blind, you can get in.
Armed with a feeling of self-satisfied smugness I confidently hit the create an account button, and then of course I had to prove I was human. Fortunately the accessibility options were actually accessible to VoiceOver on the iPhone, unlike the Mac. I selected the option to be given a text based challenge. I had to replace all the I’s in opinion with the letter l. Ah what fun. Now I don’t want to brag, but I did that without breaking a sweat, but there wasn’t a submit or complete button, instead I had to tap a button called, next challenge. I was then instructed to replace all the number 3’s in an 8 digit code with number 4’s. The fun never stops. I was half way through typing the numbers, when my focus was suddenly whipped away, and I was back in the Discord signup window, with the option to create an account. I don’t know whether there’s a ridiculously short time limit on the challenge, but whatever the reason, I was out.
So tapped on create my account again, and tried to do the text challenges again, but the same thing happened. Apparently there’s three texts challenges you have to do, before you can get in, and I kept getting kicked out before I’d typed the answer to the second one.
So I tried the accessibility cookie thing. But when I tapped on the thing that says to sign in with Google, nothing happened. So I had to give up on the phone. I could have chosen the option to type in my email address and create an image capture account that way, but by this point, I wasn’t holing out much hope on that working.
I then got back on the Mac, and tried to sign up using the Chrome browser, since the accessibility cookie image capture thing seemed to suggest that Safari wasn’t as good for accessing the cookie. The discord account creation was equally as frustrating as on Safari, but once I’d managed to do the song and dance with the date of birth selection, I clicked create account.
And then I get the image capture thing, and this time I can’t find the accessibility bit. VoiceOver reads it at one point, but I can’t access it. The accessibility bit is inaccessible.
Tabbing, arrowing, but nothing. So I give up, write this email, and try and move on with my life.
I’ll ask my wife to sign up for me later, but I’m now very much behind on my day, so alas it may not be for a couple of days.
I’d say I’ve spent about two hours trying to sign up to Discord, and I reckon if you’re sighted it would take you a minute.
I’ll try and streamline these emails into a shorter and more conducive feedback message to send to Discord support, but that’s another thing to add to my to-do list. But I think my advice for anyone else wanting to join Discord, just ask someone sighted. Sorry I can’t be here with better news.
