Hi everyone,

hope you’re doing well mid-pandemic! I got a YAESU FT-70D after receiving my license and reading some positive online reviews! The problem is that I can’t connect to any repeater in my area (NW7, London) and I am not sure if I am doing something wrong. The manual is very difficult to follow and even YouTube videos I am watching are either outdated or are using the previous model (which is little different).

Is anybody having the same transceiver and would be happy to give me some tips?

Thanks for your time!

Best,
Ioannis

Ioannis.

I assume that you are getting the repeater information from the RSGB website? They have a great section on repeaters there.

It is worth spending time reading (and rereading the manual) Yaesu manuals are a bit odd at times but all the information is there.

Check you power make sure you are using the maximum.

Its possible that if your not in a good location with a hand held receiving and transmitting are going to be a challenge. Try tuning into the APRS frequency there are frequent transmissions so you can check you are receiving a signal. Try getting outside and a bit of elevation. If you then find that your location difficult get an outdoor ariel for you FT-70D.

Personally I have had a lot of fun with a hand held and a small yagi and creating an audio/PTT keying interface for a PC for APRS and Satellite work.

Handhelds can be a bit of a challenge but once you learn their strengths and weakness they are both great fun and good value.

Don’t allow frustration to get to you.

Regards Kevin.

Congratulations on getting your License Ioannis.

Repeater coverage isn't great in London unfortunately. GB3LV and GB3NL are nearby in Enfield so you should be able to hit those?  Note that GB3NL requires a 1750 Hz Tone which is a bit dated but you should be able to find it on your radio. I assumed you'd be able to get into GB3HR but it looks like Highwood Hill is in the way. You might also be able to get GB3OY

It looks like NW7 is in a bit of a low spot, so you might have to take the radio for a walk up a hill.

Cheers
Matthew
