Hello everyone!

As many of you are aware, several parties have recently been exploring the Gateway API for service mesh use-cases. After a couple of iterations and some guidance from the Kubernetes steering committee, I'm excited to announce the launch of the GAMMA initiative to support this effort. GAMMA (Gateway API for Mesh Management and Administration) will be a dedicated workstream within the Gateway API subproject focused on service mesh applications for Gateway API. Our goal is to create a space to tackle the complex problems that lie at the intersection of Gateway API and service mesh technology without distracting from the ingress-focused work already going on.

To begin with, GAMMA will have a separate set of meetings on Tuesdays alternating between two different time slots: 3PM PT and 8AM PT. Our goal is to be as time-zone inclusive as possible, and these times can change based on community input. Though this initiative will begin with a meeting schedule distinct from the existing Gateway API meetings, our hope is that our efforts will result in service mesh becoming a first-class consideration in Gateway API and that a separate workstream will no longer be necessary.

The deliverables from this effort will be Gateway Enhancement Proposals (or GEPs) to be reviewed by the maintainers of the Gateway API project. Participants of the GAMMA workstream are encouraged (but not required) to be active in the upstream Gateway API as well. Asynchronous communication will take place in the existing Gateway API slack channel (#sig-network-gateway-api) with liberal use of threads for organization. Longer-form discussion should live in GitHub issues and GitHub discussions, and a new mesh label will be created to aide in discoverability.

Iterative processes guide most of what we do, and the GAMMA initiative is no exception. We will try this collaboration model for 3 months and then evaluate our progress to decide what (if any) changes need to be made. The leads for this initiative will be John Howard (Google), Keith Mattix (Microsoft), and Mike Morris (Hashicorp). The leads' responsibilities will include:
    - serving as liasons between upstream Gateway API and this initiative
    - being the primary points of contact for the initiative
    - technical direction and leadership
    - GEP review
    - various administrative duties (e.g. meeting recordings)

The scope of these roles will evolve (or disappear entirely) depending on the progress of the initiative. The first GAMMA meeting will kick-off on July 26th at 3PM PT with the next meeting slotted for August 2nd at 8AM PT. Please spread the word; we'd love to have you join us!

Just for clarification, the "WG Mesh" proposal is now this GAMMA initiative, right?
