Hey all,

We now have “help wanted” and “good first issue” labels across all repos in the Kubernetes organization. These labels highlight opportunities for new contributors to contribute to our project.

We have guidelines and suggestions on where you can apply these labels: https://github.com/kubernetes/community/blob/master/contributors/devel/help-wanted.md.

As you are applying the "help wanted" and "good first issue" labels, please keep the guidelines in mind. Here is a very short tldr; if you are applying labels, please read the full doc:

* "help wanted" issues should have enough details and guidance that a non-maintainer can tackle it without extra clarification.

* "good first issue" ... issues are a subset of "help wanted", and should also have the desired solution outlined, with links to the affected code, and existing tests.

* Keep an eye out for people tackling these issues and help move their PR through our process so that they don't have to hunt down reviewers or figure out test flakes themselves.

These labels can be applied using bot commands:

For the help wanted label:

/help

/remove-help

For the good first issue label:

/good-first-issue

/remove-good-first-issue

You can find more information about the labels at https://prow.k8s.io/command-help#help.

We really need everyone’s help not only to label issues appropriately going forward, but to fix up any existing issues with these labels. If you see something with these labels, but it doesn’t meet the guidelines, please either fix it up, or remove the labels.

Let’s make those new contributors feel welcome and get them coming back for more!

Best,

Nikhita, Carolyn and Guinevere

This is awesome. I'm trying to think up ways to stop it from rotting
- I think that's where the creative energy needs to go next :)

Thank you so much to Nikhita, Carolyn, and Guinevere! This was something on the ContribEx plate for awhile, and we've had multiple confusing iterations of "help wanted" labelling across our repos ("help-wanted", "help wanted", "for-new-contributors", etc). They all jumped in on this and sorted all the various pieces out (policy, documentation, automation, etc).
