I followed the instructions at https://github.com/kubernetes/kubernetes/blob/master/docs/getting-started-guides/gce.md to run Kubernetes on GCE in my GCP project.

After completion I cannot run kubectl - I get the following error:

error: couldn't read version from server: Get http://localhost:8080/api: dial tcp 127.0.0.1:8080: connection refused

How do I fix this? I don't want to use GKE, I want to use GCE.
