Hello Island Peak Family. Seems a wind of change has come to the LaPrairie door and I wanted to share the straight skinny with you, people whom I know without a doubt, have our back. Please do not feel you have to reply. It will just do me good knowing I have your compassion when it comes to something life-changing such as this with which we are all too familiar.

Here is what I sent our immediate family most recently:

Entered the hospital on June 10th and released on the 17th after one week on IV prednisone, fluids and many, many tests for complications due to Ulcerative Colitis which is considered the less-evil stepsister to Crohn's Disease. I've been diagnosed and treated for UC since 1993, just never had a bout bad enough to be hospitalized. This is perhaps ONE of the reasons I didn't partake in the North Carolina 5 mile run, so thank you, Leah, for the company!!

Next up, we have an appointment with Mayo's Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department on July 1st. There we will start the complete evaluation and prognosis of the newly discovered auto-immune disease of my liver bile ducts called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC). From the cursory information we've been provided thus far, PSC is a slow degeneration and scarring of the liver bile ducts which presents a high risk of liver failure and cancer. Admittedly, scary territory for which I will be screened and treated throughout life now. Interestingly, 8+ out of 10 people diagnosed with PSC have Ulcerative Colitis, while -1 out of 10 UC patients will have PSC. Go figure.

So...I am on a new path to being a Health Nut! Yes. I will miss my wine but I sure as hell don't want my kids to miss me any sooner than they have to. FYI to Charlie...I bought John a juicer for Father's Day and out counters are teeming with produce!!

Thanks to all who sent me words of encouragement on Facebook. As you would expect, John is taking care of me better than anyone deserves.

Hi Mary,

Sending you positive vibes, keep up your great attitude and rocking life.

I've been following the coast to coast run - amazing - now this is millions of steps.

Figure 180 steps a minute. Each marathon is 4 hrs so this is 240 mins. 240x180= 43,200 steps per marathon. It is 3,300mi from CA to ME across the US. Each marathon is 26.2mi so running across the country is 126 marathons. 43,200 steps x 126 marathons equals 5,443,300 steps. One more step 5,443,300 times. Go team!
