Hi Team,

I have the jobs in jenkins server and couldn’t be able to view the jobs in jenkins dashboard.

Can some one help me?

Could you share some more details about the issue at hand with following questions answered

1 - the job is not visible when you visit your Jenkins url only ?
2 - the job is not visible in specific view on your Jenkins ?
3 - is RBAC turned on your Jenkins using https://plugins.jenkins.io/role-strategy/ ?
4 - is anyone else facing same issue on your Jenkins ?

With RBAC enabled, you have to review job name/ pattern mapping to your configured access role by going to Jenkins manage settings and clicking Manage roles and access ( may not be quoting exact words )

Thank you

2.176.1 is almost 4 years old. Why are you using such old releases?

Hi Alex,

For most of the applications , we are using java8.
Hence , the new jenkins version which is not supported for java8.

So that i am planning to upgrade the jenkins version as 2.129 , which is compatible with java8.

Java8 on Jenkins is practically EOL last year, refer https://www.jenkins.io/blog/2022/06/28/require-java-11/ for more details

Recommend running latest stable Jenkins for various major security updates

The Java version Jenkins runs on is independent of the Java version used by your apps.

You have  the following options:
 - install jenkins in a supported version ( LTS or the  latest weekly releases) on a  supported java version, update regularly, enjoy the latest plugin updates and get support here
 - use an horribly outdated version, accept that many plugins are not available, have many security flaws and manage everything on your own.

Ashok
You need to distinguish Java that is used to run Jenkins and Java that is used to build your applications - these do NOT require to be the same. That means that you can install newer Jenkins , e.g.2.387.1 (as recommended) and still use your Java 8 for applications

Nick

Jenkins indeed requires Java11 at least but it also allows to install any addtional Java versions that are supported by the system the build is running on. The page https://www.jenkins.io/doc/administration/requirements/java/ explains the Jenkins requirements for Java. If you experience the problems with Java 8 then there are some configuration issues.

I have Jenkins installation with four different Java installed - each JVM has its own installation folder ans I have defined for each of them a separate environment variable. After that I'm able to select for the build whatever JVM I've installed. Jenkins itself is running on JDK-11.0.7

Ashok,

Jenkins 2.176.1 require Java 8 for its operation - using Java 11 may not be fully supported.

If your application require Java 8, ten you can install latest Jenkins that run on Java 11 and install Java 8 as additional tool. When you configure the build for your application you should select installed Java 8 as build JVM - this is the only way forward.

Regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

We are using another jenkins instance, which is 2.176.1 version and it is running fine but not sure why this one has been facing issues.

Note: I have already highlighted the issue, which you have suggested to my boss, but he is asking the question why another jenkins instance, which is working fine without any issues.

Not sure how to convince them.

Nobody told you so. They all told you to update your old Jenkins, right from the beginning. However, it might be a good idea to first clone your existing setup (It's a VM, isn't it?) and test the update on the cloned one.

Bye...

Hi Ashok,

To find the answers to the questions asked by your boss I would like to have more details about your Jenkins environment, both for 2.176.1 version and the version you are testing. The initial  information I'll be looking for include:
- what operation system is used for both instances
- how Jenkins is installed, i.e. what application server is used, how it is started, etc.
- how different versions of Java are installed

Additional information may be required further.

If you wish to keep this information confidential you may send it to me directly to Nick.S...@gmail.com

As to upgrade path: your initial Jenkins is really too old and most likely there is no upgrade path from your version to the latest one - there were too many changes in Jenkins API. However you may try to migrate the required jobs from old system to a new one.

With best regards,
Nick

Hi Nick,

I have upgraded the jenkins version to 2.387.1 and am using java8 for building our applications.
I have been facing the following issue:
java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: org.kohsuke.groovy.sandbox.SandboxTransformer.mightBePositionalArgumentConstructor(Lorg/codehaus/groovy/ast/expr/VariableExpression;)Z
	at com.cloudbees.groovy.cps.SandboxCpsTransformer.visitAssignmentOrCast(SandboxCpsTransformer.java:93)
	at com.cloudbees.groovy.cps.CpsTransformer$42.run(CpsTransformer.java:1171)
	at com.cloudbees.groovy.cps.CpsTransformer.makeChildren(CpsTransformer.java:446)
Note: I did a few findings about issue
1). Groovy libraries and groovy plugin issue
Not sure how to proceed to fix this issue.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Ashok,

From my experience the java.lang.NoSuchMethodError exception is usually thrown when Java classpath contains incompatible modules and this is caused by configuration error, e.g. two different versions of the same package are present. To troubleshoot this I need the following info (unfortunately, I do not have experience with MacOS, so, forgive me my silly :-( questions):
1. How Jenkins was installed on MacOS? Jenkins docs have the page https://www.jenkins.io/download/lts/macos/ with installation instructions for MacOS - did you followed it?
2. How Jenkins service is configured? Service configuration file will be sufficient
3. How JVMs are installed? Can different versions of Java co-exist in MacOS?
4. How JVMs are configured for Jenkins? This information is available in Jenkins on page Manage Jenkins -> Global Tool Configuration -> JDK (screenshot will be OK)
5. How Jenkins build is configured to use Java8? It would be nice if yoe can send the config.xml file for this job - it is located in /var/lib/jenkins/jobs/{JobName}/ folder (the path may differ - this was taken fron Linux)
6. Can I have a full execution log for the failing build?

In addition - I have found this chat on stackoverflow - https://stackoverflow.com/questions/74249679/jenkins-groovy-unix-script-error-java-lang-nosuchmethoderror-boolean-mightbepo - you can have a look

I suggest you to send the info directly to my e-mail - this thread in jenkins-user group become clotted and unmanageable

Regards,
Nick

Could you share some more details about the issue at hand with following questions answered

1 - the job is not visible when you visit your Jenkins url only ? : Not like that If i go to specific view , I could n't be able to see the jobs.
2 - the job is not visible in specific view on your Jenkins ? : Yes
3 - is RBAC turned on your Jenkins using https://plugins.jenkins.io/role-strategy/ ?: Yes
4 - is anyone else facing same issue on your Jenkins ? : Yes

With RBAC enabled, you have to review job name/ pattern mapping to your configured access role by going to Jenkins manage settings and clicking Manage roles and access ( may not be quoting exact words )

Thank you

Any chance you're using the "Matrix Authorization Strategy Plugin" and got the permissions wrong?
