Was it wild or cultivated?
If wild, it can not be S. nipponica.

Thank you Thakur ji. I found it growing in the wild and quite agree with your advice. Here is a different specimen but very likely the same species. I recall square wine-coloured or lighter stems.

Garg ji, last photograph by Ashwani ji on Spiraea pages for S. canescens is doubtful. That is not part of the original post by Ashwani ji. That appears S. cantoniensis.
