Might this be as simple as having accidentally assigned a color to the stroke rather than the fill? I assume you know that generally speaking type has a stroke of <none> and a fill of whatever is the desired color. That's not to say the stroke never has a color assigned, as there are situations where it's needed. So ID doesn't prevent you from assigning one. When you do that unintentionally, you get unexpected results.
