Twelve Duck Species at Four Local Locations Sunday 2-22-26

Hello Bird People,

Cold to begin with so I didn't start too early but then covered 4
water areas in search of ducks.
Started at the Northwestern Lagoon which had very few ducks but did
have 2 female Ruddy Ducks. Better results at Gillson Park's Wilmette
Harbor where I had 8 species of ducks with the best being an adult
male Canvasback.& many Redheads. Then drove the Skokie Lagoons along
Forest Way Drive stopping wherever I found open water which was only a
few places. The only new duck was one Black Duck. Lastly another visit
to Lake Opeka where I added Lesser Scaup & Ring Necked Duck. So 12
duck species which isn't bad considering where I went & how few
puddle/dabbling ducks I saw.

Canada Goose (13)
Mallard (37)
Red Breasted Merganser (1-PR)
Ruddy Duck (2-F)
Ring Billed (2) & Herring (1) Gulls

Wilmette Harbor (10:20-11 am)

Mallard (14)
Redhead (26)
CANVASBACK (1-M)
Greater Scaup (3)
Greater/Lesser Scaup (1)
Goldeneye (1-M)
Hooded Merganser (3-M & 5-F)
Common (6) & Red Breasted (8) Mergansers
Ring Billed (2) & Herring (3) Gulls
Crow (1) & House Sparrows (heard)

Skokie Lagoons along Forest Way Drive (11:30-noon)

Great Blue Heron (1)
Canada Goose (2 fly-bys) & Mallard (36)
BLACK DUCK (1)
Goldeneye (8)
Common (4) & Red Breasted (21) Mergansers
Herring Gull (2)
Crow (2)

Lake Opeka (1-1:30 pm)

Canada Goose (30-32)
Mallard (35)
Lesser Scaup (1-M)
RING NECKED DUCK (3-M)
Goldeneye (16)
Red Breasted Merganser (26)
Ring Billed (6) & Herring (10) Gulls

So 18 species today plus 3 roadside additions for a total of 21 for
the day including 12
species of ducks. Bird-Of-The-Day will be the fine looking male
Canvasback & Runners-Up
will be the 3 Ring Necked Ducks & all those Redheads. It was an ok day.
