Hello Bird People,

With April 15 approaching I decided I'd better finish my income taxes
so I only did a short visit to Montrose & then went home to get to
work. Bird numbers were low but the number of species was better. And
I found a new year bird that I wasn't expecting for a while.

Montrose Point (7:15-10:30 am)

Common Loon (1, harbor mouth)
D.C. Cormorant (15)
Canada Goose (8)
Mallard (6)
Red Breasted Merganser (5)
Ruddy Duck (2)
Killdeer (1, dunes)
Ring Billed (28) & Herring (4) Gulls
Caspian Tern (4)
Rock Pigeon (1)
Yellow Bellied Sapsucker (1, dunes)
Downy Woodpecker (2-M & 1-F)
Ficker (4-5)
Eastern Phoebe (1)
PURPLE MARTIN (4) (FOY)
Tree Swallow (9)
Rough Winged Swallow (1, by the pier)
Crow (2)
Chickadee (1)
Brown Creeper (2)
WINTER WREN (1)
MARSH WREN (1, by the old water feature) (FOY)
Ruby Crowned (2) & Golden Crowned (1) Kinglets
Hermit Thrush (10)
Robin (~15)
Brown Thrasher (4)
Starling (6)
Yellow Rumped Myrtle Warbler (2)
Cardinal (2-M & 1-F)
Eastern Towhee (2-M)
Savannah Sparrow (1)
Song Sparrow (8)
Fox Sparrow (2)
Swamp Sparrow (6)
White Throated Sparrow (10)
Junco (4)
Red Wings (8), Grackles (10) & Cowbirds (3-M & 1-F)
House Sparrow (12)

So 41 species at Montrose & no roadside additions.
Bird-Of-The-Day will be the early Marsh Wren & Runner-Up will be the
Purple Martins.
There are a lot of rare birds being seen in other parts of Illinois so
keep your eyes open.
And there was an afternoon report that one of the Piping Plovers was
back at Montrose.
