I was chatting with Misagh this morning and we happened upon the idea of holding a users conference of sorts for the Open Source IAM Ecosystem that spans industry and includes a variety of open source IAM components and projects.

Something like this:
1) variety of open source IAM components and projects
2) indiviudal and join sessions around implementation, integration, architecture, etc
3) industry neutral
4) good people, good location, good beer (if that's your thing :)  (i.e. cross project collaboration)

Are we ready for something like this?  If so, I'm ready to start working on it, and see how we could pull it off either independently or in conjunction with another event like Apereo, ApacheCon, Libre, etc.

Best,
Bill

+1 to the idea of an open source IAM conference.

Hello,

thanks for this document!

Regarding the conference, I wonder what would differ from an LDAPCon
(http://ldapcon.org). Is there a benefit to organize another event
(different public, different technologies?) or should we try to mix both
events?

Hi,
I like this idea as well.

I am definitely not expert in this field, but probably ApacheCon would
not be suitable, especially now that it is organized by the Linux
Foundation.

So we either go with "affine" conferences (like as LDAPCon as proposed
by Clément) or independent - which might be very risky, especially for
the first time(s).

Any thoughts?

Hi,

I like the idea very much.

At the end of the last year, in Vienna at the Identity conference we (guys around identity ecosystem) have interesting discussions with representatives from academia sector, including Geant and Internet2 and they encourages us to finish setting our goals and reach them out to start communicating about overlaps and identifying possible cooperation.

We (Evolveum) would like to attend Geant and Internet2 summits this year to understand them better, explore their goals, struggles and so on.

In case you are interested in names, events details and so on, I can look them up and share.

So definitely we can move it further and I would vote to do a collocated event with some of the Academic organization.

regards,
Igor

Igor,

That's awesome news. I'll be at Internet2 summit in Chicago this May
15-18 for the conference and TIER meetings. Lafayette College, which
is my primary employer, is a TIER investor and I'm involved in a few
of the working groups. I also still work with Unicon and have a
personal interested in the open source IAM ecosystem.

http://www.internet2.edu/vision-initiatives/initiatives/trust-identity-education-research/

Apereo is another academic focused event, and it has been the home for
CAS for a long time. They have had conferences in the Americas,
Europe and Asia and are another likely candidate.

I also wonder about hooking up with more something that is more
identity focused and less industry specific events like IIW.
Something like LDAPCon might work if we can shift the focus to more
general Open Source IAM solutions. The criteria I'm thinking we want
to meet is:

1) industry neutral
2) OSS licensing neutral (i.e. OSI approved)
3) a variety of open source solutions (not just one project,
foundation, protocol, etc)
4) corporate partner friendly

Goals of the conference:
a) for deployers, potential deployers, system integrators, and project
participants - network with peers, learn about and contribute to new
solutions, project releases, direction, architectures, etc.
b) for corporate partners - help spread the word about services,
success stories, offerings, support the community, etc.

Make sense?

Best,
Bill

I must admit I'm not that familiar with LDAPCon, but I'm imaging a
broader focus that would encompass all aspects of open source IAM
solutions/projects/architectures/protocol/etc vs "It [LDAPcon] focuses
on implementation and integration of LDAP servers and LDAP-enabled
client applications".

That said it might make sense to bootstrap with LDAPCon. At this stage
of the game it would be helpful to get all possible candidate
conference partners on the table.

Best,
Bill

Yes but we tried to open it to IAM solutions in general, as you can see
in the program of the last edition: http://ldapcon.org/2015/?page_id=136

As LDAPCon i every 2 years, we can also have the IAM conference the
other year, so we will have a conference per year. On the other hand,
it's not easy to organize such conference so it can be nice to gather
our forces on one single event.

Next LDAPCon will be in 2017, but we haven't choose any location yet (or
I'm not aware of it).

LDAPCon is a good fit because many of the same organizations that are on this mailing list will be in attendance.

If we are to piggyback off this conference, we'd need to schedule it either just prior or afterwards.  This is doable because it's currently three days, one for tutorials, two for talks.  (which leaves two days to work with).

As Clement pointed out, it's held every two years, with the next in '17, location TBD.

Not sure we want to wait that long though.
