to hugin and other free panoramic software
I installed the hugin suite (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hugin/hugin-builds, sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hugin <and other stuff that goes with it- see bottom- found at http://wiki.panotools.org/Hugin_Compiling_Ubuntu>) and panorama does not work. Immediately upon opening the program I get the following error in it's own separate window:

ASSERT INFO:
/usr/include/wx-3.0/wx/object.h(160): assert "wxDynamicCast(ptr, T)" failed in wxCheckCast(): wxStaticCast() used incorrectly

BACKTRACE:
[1] GLPreviewFrame::SetGuiLevel(GuiLevel)
[2] MainFrame::SetGuiLevel(GuiLevel)
[3] MainFrame::MainFrame(wxWindow*, HuginBase::Panorama&)
[4] huginApp::OnInit()
[5] wxEntry(int&, wchar_t**)
[6] main
[7] __libc_start_main
[8] _start

to further complicate things:

$ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hugin enblend panini
<clip>
Reading package lists... Done
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package panini

 I then removed panini and the stuff besides panini installed:

 $ sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install hugin enblend
<clip>
Reading state information... Done
hugin is already the newest version.
enblend is already the newest version.
enblend set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
(I enstalled it earlier)

The people who produced hugin need to know about the panini error but I can not find how to contact them.

Any ideas how to fix it?
My web search for the exact error didn't turn up anything.
I don't know enough to know what to remove.

I can not reproduce this with hugin 2015.0.0+dfsg-0ubuntu2~trusty from
ppa:hugin/hugin-builds on Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS (amd64). What flavour of
linux Mint do you use?

Have you used Hugin before on this installation? If yes, can you try to
move $HOME/.hugin* out of the way and retry starting hugin? Can you
start hugin from the command line and send the output?

Another option would be to try the Nightly hugin builds from
ppa:hugin/nightly

The Panini Perspective Tool is not packaged currently , neither by
Debian, nor Ubuntu nor the Hugin PPA Packagers. I don't remember the
reason for this, but the latest release of panini is from 2012, this may
be a reason.

I got smart and started it from the command line: Which gave an error report (below) and spat some thing else out as well. I'm going to try not to clutter the list any. If you are interested:

Who or what tells you that? And what did you do to provoke this
information?

Please understand that we can not read minds. Unless you tell us what
you did and what happened afterwards, we can not help you.
So, again:

o what did you do? And how?
o what happened then?

As a side note, please do not top post and reply with your findings
below the lines in the message you received, like this:

apt-get told me hugin was already up to date. A moment later I went into the repository and removed hugin* repositories, update the list and then installed hugin again and apt responded by saying some packages had not been fully removed or installed and then it asked if it should. (a) I said to do it but after the computer was finished doing its thing hugin still will not act properly.

Please do not top post.

None of the below has any relation with hugin: these are all standard
updates. Your hugin installation has not been altered by this in any
way, so why should it behave different?
I still don't know
o what linux mint flavour you have installed: Can you send us the output of

cat /etc/os-release

o What hugin you currently have installed. Can you send us the output of

dpkg -s hugin

Description: panorama photo stitcher - GUI tools
 Hugin is a panorama photo stitching program. Essentially, Hugin is a
 GUI frontend for Panorama Tools. Stitching is accomplished by using
 several overlapping photos taken from the same location, and using
 control points to align and transform the photos so that they can be
 blended together to form a larger image. Hugin allows for the easy
 creation of control points between two images, optimization of the
 image transforms, and much more.
 .
 This package includes the following graphical interfaces, using the
 command-line tools provided in the hugin-tools package:
  * hugin                - Hugin panorama creator.
  * hugin_stitch_project - Hugin batch stitcher.
  * PTBatcherGUI         - Batch controller for the stitching process.
  * calibrate_lens_gui   - Lens calibration tool.

Because we currently have 891 downloads for hugin
2015.0.0+dfsg-0ubuntu2~trusty for amd64 since we published it and if
there was an obvious problem like the one you reported, we would have
been informed about it by now. Additionally, I take the effort of
testing these builds on most of the standard Ubuntu versions prior to
releasing them on the hugin-builds ppa in order to minimize error
reports. So when your error report rolled in, I was sure that there has
to be an additional parameter in the mix. So, again, I need to know

o What Linux Mint flavour do you use? I will install it on my test
system here in order to get more information, but it does not make much
sense if I get the wrong one.

o Did you try the move all the $HOME/.hugin* files out of the way?

My home OS is Mint... Currently I have 17.3 installed although when we first began our little chat it was 17.2 I hoped the upgrade would change something.

Is moving all of the $HOME/.hugin* files something that I should do? I never heard such a thing so I did not do it. Where should I move them to?

Did you upgrade all the libraries? It's possible that this could be
an issue with one of them.

You missed the detail: this would be an idea if you had been running a
previous version of hugin. But the simplest way to do this is:

$ cd
$ mv .hugin .hugin-old

Then try again. If there are no settings in your .hugin that interest
you, you can just blow it away.

Did you upgrade all the libraries?  It's possible that this could be

You missed the detail: this would be an idea if you had been running a

 In inverse order:
This is the first time I have even heard of hugin. I just got into property photography and I'm interested in stitching photos together to imitate a wide angle lens and the LUG in phoenix arizona suggested hugin. As such there are no settings I need to save but in the same vein there is no need to move  the $HOME/.hugin files.

 Updating the libraries is something I do not believe I have done. All I can say that I have done is used the (GUI) update manager and because that does not update everything every once in awhile I open a terminal and run apt-get upgrade and I think that updates the libraries. I ran apt-get upgrade earlier today and it still will not behave!

You guys do not know how grateful I am for all of your help!

Pardon me, Michael, who is them?

Normally an "update" process done from the terminal will always include

sudo apt-get update
& upgrade
& dist-upgrade

which is the same you normally do via the gui, excepions exluded
(partial updates, troubles while updating and so).

Regards,

I got hugin to install! First I used apt to remove it. Then I opened synaptic and removed its associated files. Then I reinstalled it with synaptic and now it runs!

Great, Michael.

This could be an unique opportunity to get more involved with linux
commands, too.

Used to use Linux Mint. They're official advice to people wanting to migrate from one version to a newer one is: re-install, do not use dist-upgrade.

Glad the OP's Hugin is working now!
