Wave gliders

I saw these mentioned in a military electronics publication (the Air Force is using them to monitor sea target areas).

The claimed current role is intel gathering, although it seems unlikely that
nobody at Boeing or the US Navy considered a version bearing a warhead. How
fast do mines need to move?

Mines aren’t generally supposed to move, although in untethered mines were used against German river traffic in WWII. It seems like a wave glider would be an unnecessarily complex and expensive mine. A really slow torpedo would be a very niche device.

Oh indeed, agree 100% -- but you just /know/ someone with scrambled eggs on
their visor has asked for such a version. Whether or not it ever got prototyped
or made it into production, who knows. The USN isn't as blabby as the USAF
about their stuff.

It’s going to be interesting to watch arms procurement for the next few years. The wars in the Ukraine and the Gulf certainly have militaries focused on cheap drones, but it’s unclear if countermeasures will negate much of their current advantages. Of course the US may be preoccupied in building battleships instead…
