Good Morning!

I'm about to set up a spare laptop for my HL2 with Linux.   I'm looking for a Linux distribution that requires the least mucking around when setting up the HL2 with the various SDR programs.  I've used most the common Linux distros.  I've got no real preference.

I started with Centos7, since I had a laptop already set up with that, but that was a fail for Spark since  it comes as a Debian package (and I'd rather switch distros than sort that out).  I'm using a Raspi4 with Spark at the moment, but the laptop has more horsepower.

Suggestions?    Ubuntu?  Linux Mint?   or ??

Hi Bill,
the only reason that there is only a .deb for spark is that nobody has asked for anything else:) It is easy for me to publish the raw files like I used to which should run anywhere and I can package for other distros if there is demand. Personally I run mint, mainly because it has been mentioned here most so makes sense for me to test on.

To get something that "just works" or as close as you can get in the Linux world ;-), I'd use Ubuntu or an Ubuntu-derived distribution like Mint. Personally, I use Linux Mint 20.1 on my "radio computer." My guess is almost any distro could be made to work if you want to spend enough time rebuilding or back-porting packages. Because most Linux-using hams seem to use Ubuntu, the easiest thing is to do the same.

Good luck!

openSUSE,  Fedora 33 both rpm distros like CentOS which is based on Fedora.

I use openSUSE x86_54 Tumbleweed and Leap, Ubuntu x86_64 and Arm and
Fedora 33.

quisk-4.1.77-1.fc33.x86_64 and wsjtx-2.2.2-6.fc33.x86_64 available in
the repo so it's an easy install.

HL2/quisk is up and running here on FC33. Just need to configure quisk
per Steve's video on Youtube.

Most  favour Ubuntu (horrible but popular)  and Mint.

I made a living for many years with Redhat distributions. Years ago they had the best package management, but not anymore. I think they've lost their way, use Debian on everything of mine. Nice if you want to experiment with Raspberry Pi since they deviate little from Debian. The others like Ubuntu I just see as Debian with a bunch of resource wasting clutter I never use added on top of it.

I also run my HL2 from a Raspberry Pi 4.  It's running stock Raspberry Pi (formerly Raspbian) OS.  Since that's a Debian derivative, I'd stick with Debian.  73, Ron, n6ywu

Hi Kristofer,
I haven't seen a difference in functionality between Fedora's dnf/rpm,
Ubuntu/Debian apt/aptitude and SUSE yast/zypper.
Apart from the names being different they easily achieve the same outcomes.

Ubuntu became famous, don't know why as it ends up broken after a number
of upgrades, requiring a fresh install,  where the others are never
affected.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my prefered distro for HL2 question.

Based on the responses, it appears like Debian based distros are the most popular for the HL2.
I'll give Linux Mint a shot.

Hi Bill,

I use Linux Mint or Ubuntu Server. Unlike Sid, I have not experienced any problems with upgrade. I am running two upgraded Linux Mint machines which had their first version installed years ago.

Hi Steve,
I haven't tried Mint, perhaps it's better put together than Ubuntu and
no doubt why it has such a huge following.

I never have problems with openSUSE or Fedora which both regularly issue
large updates more often amounting to several thousand packages each week.
I suspect they do very large rebuilds, bumping up the revision levels to
make sure everything fits.
73 ... Sid.
