I am setting up a raspberry Pi 5 with Ubuntu and Ros2 Jazzy. Now getting my raspberry pi camera to come alive and it seems that there are some packages that have to be rebuilt. Looking through our forum archive it's clear that this is a very popular (in a bad way) topic.

I remember that one of our prolific members is hosting a private apt-get repository (not sure of the right terminology) with rebuilt packages for raspberry pi and ubuntu.

I can't find the thread. Do you know what it was?

Thanks,

Pito

Hello Pito,

I build some packages [currently for Ubuntu 24.04]. But I'm not sure, if
they will help you. They should only be needed for the PiCam v3 and
friends. They are also not really ROS2 packages, just the base libraries
and related things. They should not hurt;-)

Anyhow, the PPA is at
https://launchpad.net/~marco-sonic/+archive/ubuntu/rasppios

Let me know, if that's the one, you were looking for.

Thanks,

Pito, Marco, Attached is a public repo that documents using a RasPi  MiPi Camera, v2 or v3 on a Raspberry 5 (and maybe RPi4) that I put together a year ago from an extensive discussion among us HBRC folks. The procedure  includes deploying specific edits to the RaspI /boot/firmware/config.txt, installing  Marco's PPA,  compiling camera_ros.

I've successfully used this to deploy a V2.1 Camera on two RaspI 5 ROS 2 Jazzy systems couple months ago.

Hope it still works :)

You do *not* have to build camera_ros from source! The
ros-jazzy-camera-ros package should work just fine with my libraries
(just tried it again because Pito asked that question;-) But off course
you're free to build your own;-)

Have fun;-)

if you run a sudo apt install of camera ros, won't it install the default libcamera, this breaking Marco's version?

It should not.

Some background:
* My packages follow the system naming convention, but have a much
higher version numbers. So unless Ubuntu 24.04 starts to ship much newer
versions (in which case that would hopefully include the RasPi changes),
the 'system package updates' would stay below my version.
* The ros-*-camera-ros package depends on the ros-*-libcamera, but my
libcamera 'provides (Debian packaging dependency term)' at least
'ros-jazzy-libcamera', again with a higher version than the one from the
official build. I don't remember, what happens when you *have* the
'ros-jazzy-libcamera' package already installed:-( Worst case, uninstall
all '*libcamera*' packages and just install mine;-)
* Thinking about this, I realized, I did *not* include 'provides' for
'ros-kilted-libcamera' and 'ros-rolling-libcamera' :-( I'll try to fix
that when I rebuild eventually.
