Hi Core HHBS members,

Duncan started a new urban bee group for Halifax and was wondering if we wanted to join forces. I wouldn’t mind passing the torch for having someone else oversee the email and then they could also revamp the website.

I shared their Facebook page in a post on the HHBS Facebook page.

What does everyone think? If not, would someone else like to have the login for the email? I’m getting out of beekeeping so don’t have interest in volunteering anymore. :(

Hey Jill,

Aww, you're getting out of beekeeping?  Do you have too much else on the go?  (I can relate!)

I hadn't heard anything about the new bee group.  What's it called?  How do we get in touch with him?

If we want to shutter the Halifax Honey Bee Society, then we at least need to have a vote about what to do with all the membership dues.  I personally would rather see them do something useful in the community than hand money over to another group.

Michelle

Hi folks.

Could someone remove me from this email network?

I haven’t had bees for going on 3 years now and I truly have nothing to add to these decisions.

Cheers and thanks,

Yes, I just find it to be an errand instead of a pleasure now. The enchantment has fizzled out for me.

We can keep things separate if that’s what the group votes, but could someone take over the email and website for me?

Here’s the FB page:

Jillian,
I am saddened but not surprised by your decision.  You have been hinting at leaving for a couple of years now.  We did some nice projects together, and you will be missed.
I still have my own hives, but they have been struggling in the last few years.  The Society hive died out a couple of years ago.  I am not sure what to do with the wooden ware.  Although I plan to keep my hives, I have also been planning on cutting back at least a bit.
It seems like no one wants to make additional commitments to the Society.  We can obviously let things just go dormant but I fear that it may be difficult to start back up again when fresh new members arrive on the scene.

Hi Roger,

I think it makes sense for you to just keep the wooden ware and make use of it within your apiary, if needed (if others agree). I think it’d be a long time until “society” bees get put into the old hive and it might as well not sit there used.

Should we have a quick meeting with Duncan or do a email vote about what to do? I emailed Nicole to see about the email listserv (to remove Marcel) and that this option is on the table. Not sure what everyone wants to do with the bank account. Just keep things as is?

Hi,  No strong thoughts on the matter, I still potter along with my
three hives, my 1977 Jones honey extractor,  and the useful remnants of
the 1970/1980s small  commercial operation we ran in the Valley.
However, going dormant does not seem to be an option and starting up now
unlikely.  The two options then are either amalgamate or close down
completely.  In both options there is the question of the funds, these
belong to all of us.  Closing down is the easy one, we sell up, combine
funds and donate; maybe to an NSBA project, food bank, or whatever we
choose. Amalgamating could be messy. What to do with the extractors, the
library (?), the funds etc.  Possibly offer extractors etc for sale
within current group first, maybe donate funds, and amalgamate. As I
said above. I am self sufficient so will go along with the general
decision. Stan

Thanks for your thoughts, Stan!

I also have no thoughts on the matter except with the hopes that someone wants to take over the email to respond to inquiries and the login to the website for making updates, if the society wishes to continue. I don’t know any information related to the funds and how closing out would work, but I like the suggestion of donating to a good cause, if folks decide to depart.

Hi,

Thanks Stan; I’m forwarding this to the rest of core since Lorraine has the equipment.
