Hi all,
I wanted to share a bit about the journey Marjorie's Bedtime Stories has taken over the years—and a quick update on where things stand today.
The site originally started as a pile of plain HTML files and server side includes. In 2006, when Marjorie's original free host was shutting down, I stepped in to offer hosting. In 2009, Marjorie and I gave it a new coat of paint and moved everything onto WordPress, where it lived comfortably for the next decade and a bit—well past Marjorie's last update in 2018.
But as anyone who's run a WordPress site knows, it requires constant attention. Updates would break features we'd added, and neglecting updates meant risking the site being hijacked by the ever-hungry tentacles of internet malware.
So in 2023, I converted the site from WordPress to 11ty—a static site generator. We’re now back to the basics: text files on disk, but with a few modern improvements. This was actually my first 11ty project, so there were a few learning bumps, but I’ve just finished a full revamp, upgrading to the latest version. The site now lives on GitHub and autopublishes to Cloudflare Pages—a setup that’s free and, as far as the internet goes, about as permanent as anything can be.
Some features have changed over the years—Google no longer offers site search, and the old RSS service is gone—but I’ve replaced them with self-hosted solutions like PageFind (which doesn’t need a back-end) and a simple RSS feed that works like everything else: just a text file in a folder.
All told, Marjorie’s website—one of the oldest continuous non-corporate story sites on the web—should be around for a long time to come. I’m proud to keep it online and welcome anyone who’d like to visit (or revisit) this little corner of internet history.
