Hi, we (MagVision) are involved in GS1 digital link on behalf of our clients, some of which are in the fashion industry, while others are refill shops etc, so we will be using GTINs and GRAIs at least.
We are setting them up with QRcodes that are gs1 digital link conformant, based on their own short domains. We will run a resolver to gain additional custom functionality, potentially one per client, but in the event long-term that we part ways or we turn it off then the domains can quickly be pointed elsewhere, potentially at (cnamed?) the official resolver id.gs1.org, along with digital link qrcodes (particularly compressed syntax) being supported at Point Of Sale in the near-distant future.

One of our clients has plans to track garments and provide direct recycling facilities to end users, along with textile constituent information to their recycling partners, but potentially other recyclers may obtain the goods and need such information.

We have become aware of two open data formats / protocols for material textile recycling information, the one proposed by Eon (CircularID protocol) and another whose name eludes me right now.

So my question is does digital link support third-party CURIES (thought I read that other non-gs1 linktypes were acceptable), suggesting I could suggest/support eon:circularid for example, or failing that is there a better choice for a recycling/raw-materials payload than just including a link entry in gs1:sustainabilityInfo with a known title or type like "CircularID Details"? Also are you aware of any similar efforts around recycling info / circular economy type data formats (preferably open) being included/utilised by any gs1 members or even conceived by one of the GS1 countries themselves?

I had previously been unaware of how to get data into the official gs1 digital link resolver, having found the UI for the trial resolver only, but recent GS1 communications offered access to ProductDNA service for free and suggested that was the way to get your product data syndicated (more like to one of the data pools e.g. tesco etc though, so unsure if it useful for most of our clients). So just to clarify, how should one get their data into the official gs1 digital link resolver if they chose not to run their own resolver?

Thank you so much for reading this far,
Tyeth Gundry

Hi Tyeth,

That's really exciting to hear! Thanks for the questions.

I'll forward your mail to the relevant folks at GS1 UK who are the ones who can help you make use of the production resolver (id.gs1.org) and answer any questions about their productDNA service. It sounds as if you don't need an account on our sandbox resolver but let me know if you do.

On circular economy, there are some properties proposed for the Web Voc in this area. See https://github.com/gs1/WebVoc/blob/master/gs1Voc_v1_3.jsonld from line 22868. It's our colleague at GS1 Netherlands behind those - I can put you in touch if you like. Circular economy initiatives are hot topics of course.

On defining new link types:
- Yes, of course, you can define your own as you wish, but it may be that only your resolver will ever recognise them.

- How would a link type of ex:circularID differ from gs1:sustainabilityInfo? If what I get from following that link is information about circular economy then I'd say that gs1:sustainabilityInfo fits the bill. If I understand you correctly, however, what you're looking for is a specific thing that says "and the sustainability info follows a particular format defined by Eon"? That's what media types are for (machine readable) and link titles (human readable). And if that's not enough, the context variable might be useful as an extra parameter? We don't define the value space for that precisely so that it's useable by anyone for anything (although, again, it may only ever be your resolver that uses it the way you do).

Defining new link types is possible, sure, but the more specific a link type is, the less interoperable it is. That's always the balance (and the pain!)

Expect to hear from GS1 UK soon,

Thanks again

Phil
