Dear All,
We are sufficient in number, to start discussion.
This post is just to know each other.
I am Prof. (Dr.) Hardeep Singh Rai, and serving Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College. B.E. (Civil) and M,Tech (Structures) from Thapar University, Patiala. Ph.D. from IIT Roorkee. Having interest in Civil Engineering as well and in CSE/IT. So this topic BIM is very suitable for me, all persons like you who wish to grab the opportunity.
I request you all, don't say this is area of Civil Engineering or Architecture or CSE/IT, just do whatever you like to do. If feel happy to enter in a new domain, do so.
Most us has exposure to CAD, Computer Programming, and we all observing building since our birth, that way, we all have knowledge of software and buildings.
Now a day, in every, there is one or two persons who is qualified in CSE/IT related field. But still Architects, Engineers, Construction and Operation/ Maintenance professionals are not getting affordable and interoperable software. Let us bridge the gap. Request your Civil, Mechanical, Architecture, Computer Science, IT, MCA, BCA friends to join this group.
As a starting point, you should try to explore FreeCAD software: https://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/Download#Development_Versions
We should work on bleeding edge version, which is 0.17, and this is build daily.
Try to make a room (or say one room home) following:
(Don't read list of content, scroll down the start building a house.)

If you find any difficulty in use of software, then try to give good read to:

My name is Charanpreet kaur. I am a third year student of Civil Engg. Dept. at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana.
I have joined this group because being a civil engg. it is very important for me to study BIM so, this is a perfect platform for me to explore BIM.

Sure, I want to learn new things especially languages even though it is not the part of civil.

Hi, Everyone.
Firstly, a big thanks to Dr. H.S. Rai for having me in this wonderful group of knowledge sharing. I am Er. Nirbhay Chauhan, B.Tech. (Civil) SBSSTC, Ferozepur and M.Tech. (Structures) GNDEC, Ludhiana, having interest in BIM & Computational Design, did/doing my research under the guidance of Sir in the domain of OpenBIM & IFC. I'm currently working as a Graduate Structural Engineer (BIM) at BuroHappold Engineering, Mumbai.

Unless you are not opening up, you won't abble to get
guidance / help form working professionals.
There are a few students, and for them the comming two
days are the golden period to discuss, explore. After
that they might be busy in their studies.
If you don't know, from where to start, then ask.
If you are facing any problem, then do let us know.
If you need any face to face meeting, then we can have
that too.
Let us open up.

Tell us more about you. What type of projects you have handled till now.

I suggest you to be admin for BIMServer.
Till now you might have heard or might have experience of mail server, web server, file server.
This is server to serve buildings (virtually).
Explore it, download, install it. Go through documentation.
Create a new thread and ask any question to clear your doubts.

Hello everyone,
I'm professional programmer and creating BIM and CAD applications.
I'm familiar with IFC file a little bit because I struggled with it for many years. Please join me this group.
I developed BIM software by using STEPCode library, OpenCASCADE, OpenGL and MFC in my spare time.
This software can open IFC file and display it as 3D model in the viewer, and inspect properties in the file.
This software is BETA version and there are many bug and slow.
But, please visit my web site. and download and try it.

Most of us don't have Windows (MS). We use Linux or Mac.
Can't you make it run on Mac and Linux?
Is it Open Source or Closed Source?

This is Windows only. and I can't make it run on Mac and Linux because large amount of source code use Windows API.

This is Windows only. and I can't make it run on Mac and Linux because large amount of source code use Windows API.
So it will be not of much use as we use Linux mostly.

This is Closed source.
Basically we prefer to work on open source material.
Because in open we have full freedom to use it and change it as per requirement.
For closed source we have to bound and work in boundries which is diff work for us.
