Hello,
I've just installed GPS essentials on a Google Pixel 5. I'm an old user of GPS Essentials, I had a Samsung A3.
I usually start a new track and go running, walking or biking, on the Pixel phone the tracking stops when the screen is off, on the A3 it didn't. I'd like it to keep recording until I stop it.
Anyone had this problem?
Is this just an Android or GPS Essentials parameter I'm missing...
Thanks,
Rodolfo

This happens to me when the screen goes off and gps essential is not in the foreground.

The same happens on my Samsung A6. I turn off any power saving modes whilst recording.

Hi Alf,

Sorry that you are having this issue. This is probably a known problem and easy to fix. Android changed their permission model some time back and introduced "background location permissions". Without this permission, Android will not provide locations to GPS Essentials, hence it stops tracking. To enable background permissions:

- Long tap on the app icon
- Tap on App Info
- Select Permissions > Location
- Select "Allow all the time"

I am working on a new version of GPS Essentials that requests background permissions from within the app. Fun fact: I currently cannot release the new version because Google is blocking updates because they say there is a problem with the way mu app requests permissions.

thank you Michael,

Unfortunately I have only "location" as permission settings (with camera and storage) probably because of android 7.0 on a discontinued rugged chinese phone (Uhans k5000). Best Features/Price rugged phone but with some software problems....

Well I'm still hopeful this is coming to a conclusion. As a matter of fact, location permissions have been misused by suspicious players in the past. I'm just not sure if Google's take to solve the problem is a turn for the better: If you install GPS Essentials then you will most probably assume that it is using your location, it is literally in its name. However, Google forces me into a multi-week battle where they tell me the permission popups need to have a disclaimer and another rationale dialog and they keep on rejecting my updates without giving any specific feedback and without any human ever responding.

Apologies for the rant, I'll keep on fighting on behalf of my users to get this resolved asap.

Dear all
Thank you for all reactions and ideas.
Thanks Michael for the solution.
I found the config on the Pixel and changed it. Still need to test - will do tomorrow.
Really now thinking about it for most apps and configs I tend to allow this and that only while the app is on. my bad.

Works as expected once the settings have been changed
One needs to tap on 'location' and only then the options are displayed. Not intuitive I'd say, but it works!
