New year greetings from Morvi

Dear family
I write from Morvi where I have spent the last two days with my daughters Avanti and Devaki in many of the haunts which Babuji might have frequented as Divan !
Morvi is a larger town than I had expected - dusty and polluted from the spate of industries that are run here. There is however, serious wealth here, quite obvious from the rows of incredibly luxurious bungalows, all in the midst of the squalor that surrounds.
The Maharaja’s properties are breathtaking and it is a pleasant surprise to find them very well maintained. I’m attaching a few pics. The first few are from Mani mandir where there is also an office complex from where the business of the State was conducted - Bapuji would’ve definitely worked out of here.
The highlight of the visit was an Art Deco palace built in the early 40s. This is after Bapuji’s time but it is stunningly beautiful- I’ve never seen an Art Deco royal residence before and I can’t imagine that anything in this style and on this scale exists anywhere else in India . The furniture and furnishings were a complete treat. Since it’s still a personal residence, I’m requested not to share photos. Even the ones I have shared, I’m asked not to share beyond family .

I have passed through Morbi so many times while going to Kutch. Wanted to visit Navlakhi port but due to time constraint never made it. Next time I will try to stay there for a day and visit both the places.

It was a good to have a virtual tour of Morvi.  Thanks for sharing.  We passed through Morvi in 2020 but similar to Dhaval, didn’t get to go and visit.  It seemed like a growing small industrial city.

Impressed to see what they have maintained from old time.  I think family left in early to mid forties from there.  Your dad would know.

Thank you so much for the tour. I have always wanted to visit Morbi, now this is spurring me on!   Where did you stay? 

I see that Dhaval has invited you to bhavnagar. I can vouch for the wonderful hosting snd delicious food that Dhaval Chhayya and family have done for us many times in their wonderful 4 bedroom apt.  

And

I am sharing some of our bhavnagar sheth  family temple pics. Takhteshwar another temple on a hilltop is also lovely.  Not as spectacular as Morbi architecture but quite lovely.

These pictures are beautiful. A huge difference from the time I saw Morbi back in 1979 when the Machuchu dam collapsed and distroyed the city. Since my mom was with Red Cross in Rajkot, we visited few times to help those in shelters nearby.

Madhavi you have definitely stirred the desire to visit Morbi, in quite a few of us. Please do share the details of where you stayed, how did you obtain permission to visit the Palace, etc. Since Manjeri & I visit Kachhch so often, we shall surely go there.

When Kamalaben when to Morbi to deliver Chandrakantbhai Sheth, she brought these beautiful ceramics from Morbi.  These antiques are 92 years old.

I remember similar ceramic dogs in the showcase in the Bhavnagar drawing room! I used to stare at them for hours, white with brown spots. Next to them was a photograph of Urmilla Mami and Krishna mama in a garden in America. Ancient memories.
