Version 5.31: (Debian 10 - buster)

Last week we began to intermittently get the
following error using a number of gam commands.

For example:

$ gam info user mcrowley
ERROR: [Errno 99] Cannot assign requested address

After a minute or so, repeating the command succeeds.

What might be the cause? Anyone else seeing this?

5.31 is anciently old. First step should always be to upgrade and test with the latest GAM release. Many problems are fixed just by upgrading:

Having said that, Googling the error indicates it's likely something specific to that Linux box:

Based on Jay's suggestions, I have replicated the problem using
gam-6.06 on Debian "Buster" and on Ubuntu "focal". Both systems
intermittently produce the error:

ERROR: [Errno 99] Cannot assign requested address

I also got a similar error using 5.31 on Windows 10:

ERROR: [WinError 10060] A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond

However, the problem using Windows seems to occur only whan the system
is connected to the campus network using VPN. I have not seen the problem
on Windows when VPN is turned off.

It appears that gam is running into a problem related to our network or domain,
not a specific computer.

What is gam trying to do that is intermittently not working?
