Google Ajax API Loader - abandoned, deprecated or what?

The Google Loader (https://developers.google.com/loader/) library didn't seem to be working for me.

However, there's nothing to suggest it's been deprecated, abandoned, or shouldn't be used.

On looking at the script itself (https://www.google.com/jsapi), it looks like the latest jquery supported is 1.7.1, and further down the dev page, it says things like

The following Google APIs are available:

Google Maps API

name: maps

versions: 2, 2.x

Well, Google Maps API v2 was deprecated some time ago.

So, er... what gives?!

Although I have not seen an official announcement regarding the deprecation of the jsapi loader, it has been noted on this group that the loader is no longer being actively developed or even, really, maintained. The dev team is discouraging it's use going forward, recommending instead that people call the various APIs and libraries directly via the URLs provided in the documentation.
